At Bonton Farms, food became a catalyst for community change. The parallels between soil, seed, plants and human life are intricately linked. A farmer takes seeds from a packet and plants them. While one eventually turns into a plant that grows strong and produces fruit, the other wilts and dies. What happened with these two seeds that were created with the same potential? Like the seeds, everyone is born with great potential. But their futures depend on the right nutrients. Bonton Farms exists to impact Bonton’s nutrients at the root level to empower residents to reach their true potential.

While many nonprofits work to solve one issue, Bonton Farms focuses on place‐based interventions to build community capacity for long‐term change. As the ecosystem of community resources improves, the neighbors in Bonton use these resources to build successful, self‐sufficient lives, ultimately interrupting the impact of decades of disenfranchisement.

Bonton Farms believes in providing tangible solutions to help the most vulnerable people and families by providing well-defined pathways to self-sufficient flourishing lives. Bonton Farms’ place‐based interventions focus on its T.E.A.C.H.E.S philosophy, creating programming and services on the following seven human essentials: transportation, education, access to financial tools, community, health and wellness, economic stability, and safe and affordable housing.

OUR NEEDS

Bonton Farms' newly redesigned Apprenticeship Program provides pathways to employment and sustainable income to residents of Bonton. The program is self-paced with eight months of curriculum guided by Bonton Farms' T.E.A.C.H.E.S philosophy focused on the following seven human essentials: transportation, education, access to financial tools, community, health and wellness, economic stability, and safe and affordable housing. Apprentices will be able to learn and work at Bonton Farms' two working farms and five social enterprises. In addition, Bonton Farms partners with Brinker International, ClubCorp and Hilti, providing apprentices with direct connections for job opportunities after their apprenticeships. To date, apprentices have opened nine additional small businesses in Bonton. For the first time in decades, Bonton has the beginnings of a thriving business infrastructure in which money stays within the community and builds neighborhood wealth.
