About HSNT

The board, staff, and volunteers at the Humane Society of North Texas (HSNT) are motivated by our unifying belief: kindness to animals is part of what it means to be human.

Founded in 1905, HSNT has been saving lives for nearly 120 years and is the oldest animal welfare organization in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. We are much more than an animal shelter; we are a resource to the entire community, offering a variety of innovative, affordable, and lifesaving services.

HSNT provides services that include pet adoptions, free or low-cost spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, returning lost pets to their owners, and cruelty investigations. HSNT operates four pet adoption centers across North Texas and a transition center in Tarrant County, as well as a 33-acre equine and livestock ranch located in Johnson County. HSNT is proud to have achieved a live release rate of 97% in 2023.

Our motto encompasses the heart of our work: Pets and People, Saving Each Other®.

Our Needs

HSNT relies almost entirely on private donations to fund our innovative, affordable, and lifesaving programs and services. There are many ways businesses, foundations, and individuals can help HSNT fulfill its crucial mission "To save shelter, protect and advocate for all animals in need in North Texas." Below are some of the ways you can make an impact on the thousands of pets we care for annually. Thank you in advance for your support!

$25: Could provide vaccinations and microchipping for an animal in need

$75: Could fund a spay or neuter surgery for a pet in need

$100: Could provide supplies for one adult pet to temporarily stay in foster care

$200: Could fund basic veterinary care for the pet of a senior citizen

$500: Could save one pet rescued from cruelty or neglect

$1,000: Could provide medical and farrier care to rehabilitate a horse

$1,500: Could provide major medical care for a severely injured animal

Volunteer Opportunities

HSNT would not be able to serve thousands of animals each year without the help of our dedicated volunteers, and we thank you! We depend greatly on volunteer support to ensure the health and happiness of our shelter pets. If you love animals, HSNT has a volunteer opening just for you!

Why Volunteer at HSNT?

When you donate your time to HSNT, you help provide the extra love and support our animals need to prepare for their forever homes. At the end of the day, you’ll know that your time had an impact on HSNT’s animals, and we’re sure they’ll have an impact on you, too!

How You Can Help

Volunteers can help HSNT in many ways such as walking dogs, playing with cats, assisting in adoptions, supporting our program staff with enrichment or training, lending an extra hand during a large cruelty case, transporting pets, representing HSNT at events, and more.

Volunteer Guidelines

All HSNT volunteers must be at least 16 years of age to volunteer at HSNT pet adoption centers. Youth volunteers ages 16-17 must have written permission from a parent or legal guardian to volunteer. However, we do have off-site opportunities for youth under the age of 16. All prospective volunteers must go through our application process.

Accepted volunteers are asked to pay a one-time non-refundable volunteer fee of $30. This fee covers the cost of the volunteer t-shirt & apron provided to each volunteer, training materials, and administrative costs.

Please complete the application here: https://www.volgistics.com/appform/1296255733 and our Volunteer Coordinator will be in touch within 5 business days.

HSNT has received Charity Navigator's highest 4-star rating for 7 years straight, most recently receiving a near-perfect score (98%) in 2023.      HSNT does more with less and is funded almost entirely by private donations. Candid (Formerly Guidestar) recognized HSNT with a platinum seal for transparency for voluntarily and publicly sharing information about how we measure our progress and results.

Mission

HSNT's mission is to save, shelter, protect and advocate for all animals in need in North Texas.

Equity Statement

HSNT works to ensure the people in our community have the resources to vaccinate and spay or neuter their pets, allowing the pets to stay healthy. We provide free and low-cost services to people in the 11 lowest income zip codes in Fort Worth. Most of these zip codes are racially diverse and serve minority communities. HSNT is also an open admission shelter and accepts animals from the general public, regardless of what city they live in. HSNT is also an open adoption center.
