About HSNT
Founded in 1905, HSNT has been saving lives for 120 years and is the oldest animal welfare organization in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. We are much more than an animal shelter; we are a resource to the entire community, offering a variety of innovative, affordable, and lifesaving services.
HSNT provides services that include pet adoptions, free or low-cost spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, returning lost pets to their owners, and cruelty investigations. HSNT operates two pet adoption centers across North Texas, a transition center in Tarrant County, a low-cost clinic in Fort Worth, and a 33-acre equine ranch located in Johnson County. We also conduct adoption events at several PetSmart and Petco stores in the DFW area, as well as hosting the annual DFW MEGA Adoption Event. HSNT is proud to have helped 15,579 pets in 2024 while achieving a live release rate of 95%.
Our motto encompasses the heart of our work: Pets and People, Saving Each Other®.
Our Needs
HSNT relies almost entirely on private donations to fund our innovative, affordable, and lifesaving programs and services. There are many ways businesses, foundations, and individuals can help HSNT fulfill its crucial mission: "To save shelter, protect and advocate for all animals in need in North Texas." Below are some of the ways you can make an impact on the thousands of pets we care for annually:
$25: Could provide vaccinations and microchipping for an animal in need
$50: Could provide enrichment, toys, and treats for 20+ shelter pets
$75: Could fund a spay or neuter surgery for a pet in need
$100: Could provide supplies for one adult pet or a litter in foster care
$200: Could fund basic veterinary care for the pet of a senior citizen
$500: Could rehabilitate and care for one pet rescued from cruelty or neglect
$1,000: Could provide medical and farrier care to rehabilitate a neglected horse
$1,500: Could provide major medical care for a severely injured animal
$5,000: Could fund a major program like foster care or adoptions for one week
Volunteer Opportunities
HSNT would not be able to serve thousands of animals each year without the help of our dedicated volunteers, and we thank you! We depend greatly on volunteer support to ensure the health and happiness of our shelter pets. If you love animals, HSNT has a volunteer opening just for you!
Why Volunteer at HSNT?
When you donate your time to HSNT, you help provide the extra love and support our animals need to prepare for their forever homes. At the end of the day, you’ll know that your time had an impact on HSNT’s animals, and we’re sure they’ll have an impact on you, too!

Katy & Karter - from the floods to a happy new home!
When devastating floods hit Central Texas in July, HSNT stepped up to help our neighbors in need. We delivered over 10 tons of supplies to shelters in the Kerrville area and flew in 107 pets who were already looking for homes, making room in local shelters for lost pets to reunite with their families. Among them were Katy and Karter, a bonded pair who received the necessary medical care at HSNT before finding their perfect forever home together.
FROM THE ADOPTERS: Katy and Karter have been such a joyous addition to our home! We are adapting to having them in our laps all day and in our be
d at night. This is new territory for us, but we are really enjoying their cuddly and affectionate natures. We have been lucky with all our dogs over the years, but these two have slid right into our routines. With doggie door training only taking a couple of days, there have been very few accidents. They are both happy to be here. Katy was a little reserved at first. But she came around within the first week, offering kisses and cuddles as soon as she felt safe to do so. We love how bonded they are to each other. Overall, it has blessed us immensely, filling the holes left by losing our previous pets so close to each other. 💚
HSNT has received Charity Navigator's highest 4-star rating for 8 years straight, most recently receiving a near-perfect score (98%) in 2024. HSNT does more with less and is funded almost entirely by private donations. Candid (Formerly Guidestar) recognized HSNT with a platinum seal for transparency for voluntarily and publicly sharing information about how we measure our progress and results.
HSNT's mission is to save, shelter, protect and advocate for all animals in need in North Texas.
HSNT works to ensure the people in our community have the resources to vaccinate and spay or neuter their pets, allowing the pets to stay healthy. We provide free and low-cost services to people in the 11 lowest income zip codes in Fort Worth. Most of these zip codes are racially diverse and serve minority communities. HSNT is also an open admission shelter and accepts animals from the general public, regardless of what city they live in. HSNT is also an open adoption center.
