Altrusa is an international non-profit organization making our local communities better through leadership, partnership, and service. Our club offers an opportunity to make a real difference in Garland, Rowlett and Sachse by undertaking a variety of literacy, service, and international projects each year. Altrusa Garland celebrates our 20th year serving in the community.

In the 2024-2025 club year, we will host book fairs at five Title I elementary schools, giving free books to students as part of our literacy campaign. We have built 7 "little free libraries" which will be installed around the community and stocked with books, free to those who want them. We will continue our support of Good Samaritans of Garland, 5 Loaves Food Pantry, and Hope Clinic of Garland with cash donations and hands-on projects. Residents at local senior/nursing facilities will receive care packages and goody bags. Our Make A difference Day event carnival for un-housed families and children in our community will provide a little bit of fun and excitement in October. Each year, we award two $1,000 scholarships to deserving graduates from the Garland ISD. Sending military boxes to our active troops serves as both an international project and allows us to actively promote our patriotism.

Our Needs

Our financial needs are near and dear to our hearts, as they allow us to continue to provide for those we serve throughout the year. They enable us to purchase not only books but school supplies for our Future Readers Of Garland. They allow us to continue to give highly and deeply appreciated scholarships to deserving Garland ISD graduates. They enable us to be “bearers of gifts” to our residents at our senior care facilities. Gifts such as care packages and reading material continue to be a lasting favorite with residents, all stating that along with the visits, the gifts are welcomed and long-lasting.

Our financial donations allow us to reach out to our Active Military troops who are away from home by providing them with “Care Boxes.” We fill these boxes with personal care and hygiene products, snacks, books, games, gifts cards and many more items that our troops need while they actively serve our country.

Funding also allows us to co-sponsor our Make a Difference Day event that provides food, fun and activities for our un-housed families and families affected by domestic violence.

Giving Activity

Mission

Altrusa International Foundation of Garland's mission is to develop leadership skills, provide service to our local community, promote patriotism, and build lasting friendships.

We believe that all our activities align with our Mission Statement, serving in the local community where we live.

Through the multiple opportunities to serve together as club members alongside local non-profit partners, we have continue to build strong and lasting relationships that promote leadership and patriotism for us all.

Needs

All of our causes are important to us, but our Featured Campaign continues to be our Literacy Campaign. We believe that we can truly serve our community by making it better through literacy. We believe that the Future Readers of Garland (F.R.O.G.s), by providing books in both English and Spanish provides a service to our community that will impact generations not only now but also far into the future.

We currently host book fairs at five Title I Elementary schools within Garland ISD and are looking to expand this number soon. no only does this campaign allow us to give free books to our students, but it has also allowed us to build seven "Little Free Libraries" which we have installed throughout our communities. These libraries are stocked with books, free to those that want them. Once again, through our generous donations, we would like to continue to install more of these libraries throughout our community.

Nothing is greater than knowledge and we believe that knowledge can best be attained through reading.

Equity Statement

When we think about equity, we think about investment. At Altrusa Garland, we believe there is no better investment than that of our future. By giving, we plant the seed for growth; growth speaks of reaching outward, and reaching outward means investing in tomorrow by planting a seed today!
