At the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy (BOMLA), we are dedicated to nurturing and empowering the next generation of leaders. Established in 2011, the Obama Academy is the first single-gender all-male magnet public school campus in North Texas that serves 582 students in grades 6-12, emphasizing leadership development through accelerated math and science courses (Honors or Advanced Placement). During the same year, community leaders met to begin FRIENDS of Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy. FRIENDS of BOMLA bridges the gap between available school district funding and necessary student opportunities for the young men of BOMLA. Our priorities of support include student enrichment (local and national Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) programs, college tours, study abroad experiences, and leadership development initiatives), professional enrichment (teachers), and program enrichment to maintain cutting-edge equipment for improved learning outcomes.

In 2019, FRIENDS stepped in to fund a College Bound Program to help provide college readiness support. Before the College Bound program, the students at BOMLA garnered no more than $5 million in scholarships. However, after the FRIENDS-funded College Bound program, each graduating class has consistently secured no less than $8.7 million in scholarships. Every year, 100% of BOMLA’s students successfully graduate, and each student is accepted into colleges or universities; with several of them gaining admission to the top 100 schools worldwide.  To date, students have earned over $50 million in scholarships since the inaugural 2015 graduating class with the class of 2023 (37 students) earning over 15.7 million. Our class of 2024 earned 12.8 million in scholarships despite the delays with FAFSA.

The College Bound Program is an essential part of our mission, designed to ensure that every young man at BOMLA has the resources, guidance, and support needed to realize their dreams.

The journey to college can be daunting, but with support, it becomes a gateway to boundless opportunities. The College Bound Program at BOMLA encompasses a comprehensive suite of services and initiatives to prepare our students for college admissions and academic success. Your generous contribution will directly support:

College Tours

Our College Bound Program organizes tours to various colleges and universities, beginning in 6th grade. Through this experience, students explore campuses, interact with current students, and envision themselves as college students. These tours help demystify the college experience and inspire our students to aim high.

College Fairs

Navigating the college application process requires access to information and resources. Our program hosts college fairs that bring representatives from diverse colleges and universities. Students engage in one-on-one conversations, gather materials, and gain insights into the programs and opportunities available to ensure they make informed decisions about their future.

Tutoring Support for SAT/ACT Testing

Standardized tests are a critical component of college admissions. We provide specialized tutoring and preparatory classes for the SAT and ACT, tailored to meet the individual needs of our students. By equipping them with the skills and strategies needed to excel on these tests, we enhance their prospects for college acceptance and scholarship opportunities.

Tracking Success

Measuring the impact of our efforts is critical to our mission. We use advanced tracking software to track students' academic progress and post-graduation success. This data-driven approach allows us to refine our programs, provide targeted support where needed most, and celebrate the achievements of our graduates as they move forward in their educational journeys. This North Texas Giving Day, we invite you to join us in transforming these bright futures.

Mission

The mission of the FRIENDS of the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy is to invest in and empower endangered young men, in order to develop leaders and role models for our community. We support an academically rigorous, character-based, single-gender education that includes rich experiences outside of school. In doing so, we champion a replicable model for Dallas ISD and other school systems to benefit increasing numbers of students.
