1 $ Wiser Consumer Education, Inc. has presented numerous "Financial Literacy" workshops in various North Central Texas communities during the past 7 years. These workshops have been held at public schools, public libraries, senior centers, and churches. Through these workshops we've learned that there is a demand for more financial literacy education for both students and seniors. Most recently,we have focused on student loan debt - particularly for first generation college students. Our #1 funding priority through May 2018 is to present Know before You Owe - Student Loans programs to high school students and their families throughout the Metroplex and North Texas area. The objective of our Know before You Owe - Student Loans program is to teach both current and future college students and their families about the real costs and pitfalls of most of the financing options available today for higher education so they make informed decisions. The program is targeted primarily to high school students and their families, but will also be open to current college students and the general public. Commencing in September 2017, Know before You Owe - Student Loans events will be held throughout the 16 county region that comprises North Texas. The events will consist of student assemblies, family workshop style forums, browser-based tools, and apps. The goal is to raise enough funds to have all materials available in Spanish as well as English.. Additionally, 1 $ Wiser wishes to expand financial education for widows in particular and seniors in general throughout North Texas. Increasing numbers are finding their social security benefits suddenly reduced due to student loan debt garnishments because they co-signed for a child or grandchild who has defaulted on their student loan payments.
