The mission of American Black & Tan Coonhound Rescue, Inc. (ABTCR) is to provide:
- Quality shelter and care of unwanted, neglected and/or abused Coonhounds and Bloodhounds until proper, permanent homes can be found. ABTCR volunteers will rescue Coonhounds and Bloodhounds from animal shelters, provide necessary vet care, including spay/neuter, place the dog in a foster home pending its adoption, and arrange transport to its permanent home. Prospective adopters will be required to complete an application and undergo a screening process. An adoption fee will be charged to partially cover veterinary expenses. (75% of time)
- Advice to potential and current Coonhound and Bloodhound owners about breed characteristics, proper care, health issues, training and behavior. ABTCR will screen each adopter to ensure that the breed is a good match for this particular adopter and will educate each adopter with respect to the proper care of this breed. In addition, ABTCR will serve as an information resource after the adoption as the need arises. ABTCR will also provide advice to current owners that may be having problems with their dog in an effort to improve the experience of living with a Coonhound or a Bloodhound. Finally, ABTCR will seek to inform the public that Coonhounds and Bloodhounds are not just hunting dogs, but make excellent pets. (25% of time)
These purposes will be carried out by volunteers coordinated by a volunteer adoption coordinator. Dogs available for adoption are posted on the ABTCR website. Rescue and adoption are done on a nationwide basis.
Donations are greatly appreciated to cover expenses for vet care for our fosters that are heartworm positive, needing major medical issues (surgery), spays/neutering, vaccinations and heartworm preventative medications.
