Girls Embracing Mothers

GEM's primary focus is to empower girls in grades K-12 with mothers in prison to break the cycle of incarceration and lead successful lives with vision and purpose.
According to The Sentencing Project, over 2 million children in this country have a parent in prison. Related to this, is the increasing number of mothers who are incarcerated, which has more than doubled in the past 20 years. When a girl's mother is in prison, there is something significant missing from her life: A loving embrace. An encouraging word. An empowering connection with an influential role model. Support is needed to fund programming designed to enrich the lives of this at-risk, yet least visible, populations of children. GEM partners with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice to provide monthly enhanced visitation sessions between the mothers and daughters as well as provides monthly character cultivation workshops for the girls. At Girls Embracing Mothers, we are acutely aware of the needs of these girls in crisis and help empower them to lead successful lives with vision and purpose. Our programs offer the chance not only to break the cycle of incarceration but also to build the bond between mother and daughter. GEM is the only identified organization in Northeast Texas that offers services focused solely on daughters with mothers in prison.
