Girlstart's mission is to increase girls' interest and engagement in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through innovative, nationally-recognized informal STEM education programs. Girlstart aspires to be the national leader in designing and implementing high quality informal STEM education programs that inspire girls to transform our world. Girlstart develops and implements a range of innovative, research and standards-based education and mentorship programs designed to promote girls' early engagement and academic success in STEM, encourage girls' aspirations and persistence in STEM education and careers, and incubate a talented and diverse STEM workforce.
Since our founding in 1997, Girlstart has served girls, teachers, and families with school-based programs, professional development for teachers, summer camps, STEM career conferences, and community STEM education programs. We are focused on serving girls of diverse ethnicities, girls who live in low-income environments and/or are considered at-risk. In 2016, we served over 16,500 girls, teachers, and family members, 95% of whom participated at no cost.
Girlstart has been eager to expand our programming beyond the Central Texas area and created a strategic plan to replicate and scale our programs in Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, and beyond in a thoughtful and sustainable way. By fall 2017, we aim to increase our Girlstart After School programs in North Texas from 3 to 10, reaching at least 200 girls. All funds raised during NTX Giving Day will support the direct costs associated with our expansion in the North Texas community, providing year-round STEM programming to high-need girls in the area. We are grateful for your consideration of support and helping STEM education for girls!
