Helping Hands for Single Moms (HHSM), a proven program, assists low-income single mom families while the mothers pursue a college degree and financial independence. Our mission is strategic and multigenerational. Forty-five percent of all single parent families in the country struggle with poverty, and the surest path out of poverty is education. A single mom succeeding in college is the best mentor and model that an at-risk child can have in their life. These women are changing the long-term trajectory of their families, decreasing the likelihood of ongoing welfare dependence, as a college degree becomes the norm - the expected path to success.
However, these women face many obstacles as they attempt to work part-time, attend college full-time, manage a household and raise their children. They need a helping hand and we provide it. Our Scholarship plus services address inherent obstacles by providing practical supportive services such as: no cost auto repair; AAA towing memberships; dental care for the moms; holiday gifts for the kids; family outings; financial management training; and the Single Mom College Community. We collaborate with local businesses, academic institutions, and churches to provide these services.
Helping Hands for Single Moms Dallas is new to the community. It is an independent affiliate of HHSM which was launched in Phoenix, Arizona in 2002. Over the past 15 years, HHSM has delivered over $3 million in scholarship and support services to help hundreds of low-income single moms graduate from college and achieve financial independence. As an independent affiliate, Helping Hands for Single Moms Dallas is directed by a board of local community leaders. All funds from the North Texas Giving Day will be directed by the Dallas board of directors and expended in Dallas.
Helping Hands for Single Moms Dallas (HHSM -D) has funding needs for two critical client benefits:
1. Donations will be used to provide scholarships for low-income single mom college students. HHSM-D will provide each mom with a $4,000 annual unrestricted scholarship that will deliver financial relief for her family as they struggle to live on an insufficient income while she attends college. Scholarship funds are paid in the form of a $333 monthly stipend and assist with basic needs such as: rent; childcare; food; clothing; tuition or textbooks.
2. Funds for the cost of repairs on clients' vehicles are also being raised. HHSM-D will recruit shops to donate the labor for these repairs. A $400 donation will provide the average cost of auto repair parts for 1 family for 1 year. All donations on North Texas Giving Day will be used to provide vital support to low-income single mom college student families in the Dallas community. Other needs include: dentists to provide-in-kind dental care for single mom college students; childcare centers to provide in-kind daycare; and volunteers to assist with special events.
Following eight months of hard work by the local steering committee, Helping Hands for Single Moms Dallas (HHSM-D) was incorporated on June 29, 2017. Hundreds of struggling low-income single mom college student families in Dallas and Collin counties will need a helping hand in the coming years and HHSM-D will now be there for them. As a new and unique program, the potential for rapid expansion is great. The opportunity to volunteer and contribute to this expansion from its inception is now. Those who know, love or were single moms and value post-secondary education as a way out of poverty will find that the mission of HHSM-D is a great fit for their efforts to make our community a better place.
