Literacy Connexus helps churches help people with literacy needs in a variety of creative ways. We provide weekend workshops to prepare volunteers to teach English as a Second Language to adults. Our training is directed toward church-based ESL programs, but equally helpful for teaching any English language class in the community. We have a program that helps prepare refugee children succeed in the American school system (Ready for School), and a program that encourages and equips parents to read to their children from birth on (Books for the Border and Beyond). During the summer months, we connect church and community volunteers with meals programs to encourage children to keep reading year round (What's for Lunch). We operate three book banks in North Texas, which serve as depositories for receiving and sharing children's books on a local level. Finally, we are strong language and literacy advocates in North Texas and beyond.
Like all nonprofits, we need financial support. Contributions of new and gently-used children's books are always welcome. We need volunteers to make T-shirt book bags (instructions at http://ow.ly/PeUZ30cCSJo) and bookcases (instructions at http://ow.ly/Nqu030cCSYK). We also need volunteers for English as a Second Language (ESL) ministry.
