Waxahachie Senior Citizens Center, Inc.

The mission is twofold: 1) to provide educators a physical location, educational apparatus, and tools to teach STEM based curriculum and (2) bridge the generation gap by providing qualified senior citizens the opportunity to meet with young people and share the knowledge they have gained as professionals or knowledge experts.
The Waxahachie Senior Citizens Center Inc. seeks support from North Texas Giving Day Foundation for our Living Today for Tomorrow , Next Generation Education STEM Garden project. We believe this project will empower K-12 students, especially those from lower income families and those who live in rural areas, through STEM education. We also believe this project will bridge the generation gap by providing qualified senior citizens the opportunity to meet with young people and share the knowledge they have gained as professionals in their careers. Our organization was established in 1976 and has a proven record of accomplishment of delivering successful projects and programs driven by its strong leadership and active members. The Next Generation STEM garden is a natural extension of our on-going effort to educate the community by providing an environment where students will be exposed to ideas and activities that will instill an interest in science, technology, engineering and math disciplines. This program is unique in that it will offer intergenerational interaction with students and senior citizens. The Next Generation STEM Garden project for which we are requesting funds will make a difference in the lives of many children in the Waxahachie area by providing them with a unique physical area where they will have the opportunity to learn outside of a normal classroom environment. This garden will promote creative problem solving techniques, creativity, inquisitive thinking, and teamwork skills. We are developing the full program and curriculum and have already completed the first phase with classes scheduled for September 2017. We have key roles and positions identified and an extensive list of community partners that will offer their full support of this project. We hope that North Texas Giving will become one of our partners as well.
