A child is unidentified because of: illegal adoption, accidental separation & trafficking.
Child trafficking is defined by the United Nations as the kidnapping of a child for slavery, forced labor and exploitation. Child laundering, or illegal adoption is the stealing and selling of children under false pretenses to adopting parents. Adopting agencies may sometimes be knowing or unknowing participants in these transactions.
returned.org is an independent organization with no religious or political affiliations. We believe in science-based solutions. Empowering countries with DNA databases creates a major obstacle for child traffickers who currently rely on lack of evidence, gaps in the system and lengthy investigation processes. Trends from DNA databases are instrumental when advocating for proof of parentage laws. This prevents abducted children from entering the adoption process or crossing federal borders without a biological relative.
We partner with geneticists to identify missing children and reunite them with their families.
Our Geneticists Partners have:
- supported global lab training & DNA programs
- returned 2,500+ children back to their families
- detected over 280 illegal adoptions
We work with governments, non-profits, universities and volunteers to create a network of lasting change.
Our Needs
With model programs like DNA-ProKIDS we are able to fund the process of DNA identification and family reunification. Our goal is to operate as a bridge between victims and the genetic technologies that can solve unanswered questions. Our vision is a world where no child is ever forgotten because of geopolitical borders or lack of resources. Join us in the fight to end child trafficking and providing a path to reunification.
Your contribution funds the technology that reunites children with their searching family.
This process usually includes:
- DNA Sample Collection Kit
- Laboratory DNA testing
- Database cross-referencing
DNA tests are expensive to run on a large scale. Each test can cost up to $200 USD, and when the need is great, that financial barrier can be difficult to overcome. Costs include the actual test swab and chemical regents, the database with man power and skill for data entry and someone actively cross-referencing for a match. We help by running tests at no-cost, assisting in database processes and filling the labor gaps.
