The purpose of Amira’s House is to provide a safe and stable living environment and comprehensive program services that meet the needs of young, homeless, pregnant women between the ages of 18 and 27 in Tarrant County. Women live in the home through their pregnancy and up to one year after their infant is born. Through our services we have provided shelter, nutrition, medical advocacy, educational and vocational training, and discipleship to 13 women and 13 infants since our inception.
Young pregnant women who do not have adequate nutrition and prenatal care are at significantly greater risk of serious complications affecting both mother and baby. Low infant birth weight, infant mortality, maternal mortality, poor maternal/infant bonding, and many other complications have been reported.
Weekly we receive calls from pregnancy centers and other partnering agencies/referral sources about young women who are pregnant and facing homelessness. A safe and stable home and access to nutrition and medical care are essential for a healthy pregnancy and newborn. Ongoing parenting education and additional resources are essential for them to thrive.
