Our Needs
Diabetes is an epidemic in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 38 million Americans have diabetes and face its devastating consequences. What’s true nationwide is also true in Texas. Obesity is linked to up to 53 percent of new cases of type 2 diabetes each year. Treating the chronic disease of obesity can help prevent, delay, and even result in diabetes remission.
Texas Diabetes Epidemic:
- Approximately 2,552,500 adults in Texas, or 11.1% of the adult population, have diagnosed diabetes.
- Every year, an estimated 135,300 adults in Texas are diagnosed with diabetes.
Diabetes is expensive:
Americans with diabetes have medical expenses approximately 2.6 times higher than those who do not have diabetes. And the total estimated cost of diagnosed diabetes in the U.S. in 2022 was $412.9 billion, including $306.6 billion in direct medical costs and $106.3 billion in reduced productivity attributable to diabetes. In 2017 it was estimated that:
- Total direct medical expenses for diagnosed diabetes in Texas was $18.9 billion.
- Total indirect costs from lost productivity due to diabetes was $6.69 billion.
- Total cost of diabetes was $25.6 billion.

This year the ADA North Texas piloted a new summer camp focused on diabetes prevention - Project Power. Type 2 diabetes is a growing epidemic among young children. Project Power is a diabetes prevention camp offered to children who have been tagged as at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes by their school nurse or physician. This camp is not only teaching healthy habits and the importance of exercise, but it requires parents to attend two sessions so the entire family is involved in bettering the child's health. Project Power was a great success and we'd like to continue it for years to come. With your help we will be able to continue to expand Project Power camp and our existing two Type 1 diabetes camps; New Horizons North and South.
