In 2015, the Arlington ISD launched our district-wide archery program for high school students. Archery is hosted at the Arlington ISD Archery Center for all archers in the district, and transportation is provided to and from the archery facility for students in need of transportation. Archery is blocked during the school day. Students are expected to practice and compete outside of the school day. Archery practice facilities are open to students after school each day that the students have class. Archers will also be expected to attend archery competitions as scheduled by the archery coach. These competitions may include but are not limited to weekend competitions. Archery follows all UIL guidelines as they pertain to academic eligibility.
In the movie, Field of Dreams, Ray hears a voice whispering, "If you build it, he will come." So is true for the Arlington ISD Archery Program. With one of the only indoor school sponsored practice facilities in Texas and the 2016, 17, 19, 20, 21 and 22 State Champions, the program has exploded. In 2016-2017, over 400 students are enrolled in archery. Through practice and weekend tournaments, archers will earn the opportunity to fill a spot on their respective school's JV or Varsity Archery Team.
In the spring, archers will be selected for each high school team. NASP archery has been developed to create an athletic environment that is inclusive of all students. NASP teams are made up of 24 archers. Click on this link to learn how each AISD high school team will be selected as well as how scores are achieved.
In archery, students are introduced to and engaged in one of the oldest forms of sport. Students are progressively and systematically taught the basic concepts of competitive archery. Archery is intentionally a coed activity, therefore, both males and females alike compete together for their respective schools.
Our expectation is for every archer to perform up to their potential. Archers will have an opportunity to build relationships with students from their own campus as well as students from other campuses. We pledge to create an atmosphere of acceptance where all students feel welcome and wanted. We run our program with one motto in mind, “Live at Full Draw!” We want our students to understand that each day is a new and exciting gift and that they should do everything within their power to get the most from each. In life, much like in archery, once you have launched an arrow, it’s gone. There is nothing you can do to go back and re-shoot it so don’t worry about it. Similar can be said regarding future arrows. One cannot worry about arrows yet to be shot. Their time will come soon enough. The only thing that matters is the current arrow/current day. Total focus on the present arrow/day that you have is how we attempt to train our students.
Funds raised would be used for student Scholarships as well as a chance to go to Nationals in Kentucky. We are the State Champs in Texas with a Nationals Recognized student. Our Archers have qualified for Nationals this past school year and we could not send our archers. Funding this would allow for our archers, if qualified (winning state), to compete.
