The Center for American and International Law (CAIL)

A nonprofit organization

The Center for American and International Law (CAIL) has dedicated itself to improving the quality of justice through the professional development of lawyers and law enforcement officers. CAIL was founded as the Southwestern Legal Foundation by prominent Dallas attorney Robert Storey upon returning from his service as lead prosecutor of the Nazis at the Nuremberg Trials following World War II. Since its inception, CAIL has been actively advancing and improving the quality of justice in the North Texas community and abroad. In our last fiscal year, CAIL served up to 6,000 individuals throughout all our programs. Through our Institute for Law Enforcement Administration (ILEA), we served 943 law enforcement officers and over 100 police departments.

In the 77 years since its founding, thousands of Texas lawyers and law enforcement officers have benefited from CAIL's educational courses, many of which are hosted at our North Texas education center in Plano, Texas. CAIL's impact extends beyond program participants because the lawyers and law enforcement officers we serve play critical societal roles. Our programs help participants better serve their communities, courts, and organizations. Through programs like Actual Innocence, we help participants become better lawyers and law enforcement officers while preventing innocent people from being wrongly imprisoned, their lives destroyed, and their families devastated. Moreover, CAIL's law enforcement programs prepare police officers with ethical leadership skills to enhance community well-being and safety. Our goal is that all our participants receive the educational tools needed to exercise their responsibilities with skill, integrity, and fairness.

Mission

The Center for American and International Law (CAIL) is dedicated to improving the quality of justice through the education of lawyers and law enforcement officers in the United States and throughout the world.

Our most impactful programs are also those most in need of support.

Institute for Law Enforcement Administration (ILEA) – Offers comprehensive education for law enforcement officers and professionals, focusing on leadership, ethics, diversity, and communication skills. Many departments face limited training budgets, making it difficult for them to access this critical leadership and ethics training. Last fiscal year, we provided training to 943 officers from over 100 police departments.

Criminal Justice Programs – Delivers specialized education to all courtroom professionals, including prosecutors, defense attorneys, and judges, ensuring the highest standards of justice are upheld.

Actual Innocence Program – Educates the key players in the justice system on the primary causes of wrongful convictions and provides guidance on how to prevent them, helping to safeguard the integrity of the justice system.

The Academy for American and International Law - Introduces international lawyers to the American justice system. The program helps foster collaboration and discourse and improve international legal relations.

Needs

Current issues threatening justice and the rule of law make CAIL's work more relevant to our society at home and abroad. Funding from North Texas Giving Day will help CAIL provide high-quality ethics-driven education to North Texas-based law enforcement officers, prosecutors, and defense counsels. Your donation can help educate and train the full spectrum of North Texas professionals who protect our rights and the rights of others.

Your donation could provide the following:

$50 – support top-notch ethics education and leadership training for officers to make North Texas an even better place to live.

$250 – introduce international lawyers from developing nations to the North Texas community, Courts, and the American justice system through our Academy program.

$500 – host prosecutors, defense counsels, law enforcement officers, and judges onsite educating them on how to avoid wrongful convictions.

$1000 – provide scholarships for North Texas police officers and supervisors to attend vital courses on ethics, diversity, and community building, strengthening law enforcement and community ties.
