Davey O’Brien’s longtime friend and business partner, Charles Ringler, believed that the accomplishments and commitment of one of Fort Worth’s finest sports heroes deserved to be honored and remembered. In November 1977, just before O’Brien passed away from cancer, Ringler and other members of The Fort Worth Club established the Davey O’Brien Foundation and the Davey O’Brien Memorial Trophy.
The purpose of the Davey O’Brien Foundation is to recognize outstanding student-athletes for their achievements both on and off the field through the Foundation’s various awards programs. Since 1977, the Foundation has given scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life. Over the years, the Foundation has created three additional awards to complement the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award: the Davey O’Brien High School Scholarship, the Davey O’Brien Legends Award, and the Charles Ringler Founder’s Award.
Since 1986, the Davey O’Brien High School Scholarship, partially underwritten by Higginbotham and Simmons Bank has provided over $1.3 million to outstanding high school senior student-athletes in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. With this award, the Davey O’Brien Foundation seeks to encourage those qualities that will prepare outstanding young people to assume productive leadership roles in their adult lives.
Each year the Foundation is pleased to award the winner of the High School Scholarship Award a $30,000 scholarship to be paid towards tuition, room and board, and books. The remaining finalists will each receive a $2,500 award. The winner is announced at our annual High School Scholarship Luncheon, then honored at the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award Dinner in February.
