Working to Foster a Dementia-Friendly Community

Community OutreachDementia Friendly Community Trainings Dementia Friendly Wellness in Nature Walks Some of our Dedicated Board Members and Volunteers

The seeds of Dementia Friendly Denton County were sown more than 15 years ago through the pioneering work of a group of dedicated volunteers and professionals. They established Stepping Stones, a free, weekly occupational therapy-based support group for individuals with early to mid-stage dementia and their family caregivers. This grassroots effort brought to our community much-needed meaningful activities for persons with dementia, along with practical guidance and support for their caregivers.

As a member of the national Dementia Friendly Community movement, Dementia Friendly Denton County is committed to integrating families living with dementia into our broader community. We provide guidance, resource information, and training to businesses, organizations, caregivers, and individuals diagnosed with dementia. Together, we are dedicated to making Denton County a welcoming and supportive community for those living with dementia and their caregivers.

Advocating for Dementia Awareness in Businesses

Enhancing Quality of Life: Dementia-friendly programs aim to create inclusive and supportive environments for individuals living with dementia. These programs focus on understanding the unique needs and challenges faced by people with dementia and provide appropriate support, resources, and services

Reducing Stigma and Isolation: Dementia can often be accompanied by social stigma, misunderstanding, and isolation. Dementia-friendly programs work towards breaking down these barriers by raising awareness, challenging misconceptions, and promoting acceptance and inclusion

Empowering Caregivers and Families: Caring for someone with dementia can be physically, emotionally, and mentally demanding. These programs offer education, training, and support services to help caregivers better understand dementia, learn effective communication strategies, manage challenging behaviors, and cope with the demands of caregiving.

Promoting Safety and Independence: Dementia-friendly programs focus on creating safe and accessible environments that minimize potential risks and hazards. By promoting safety measures and enhancing accessibility, these programs enable individuals with dementia to maintain their independence and dignity for as long as possible.

Economic and Societal Impact:  By supporting dementia-friendly programs, communities and societies can effectively address the growing impact of dementia.  Furthermore, they foster an inclusive and supportive society that values the contributions and rights of people with dementia, leading to a more equitable and compassionate society for all.

Supporting dementia-friendly programs is crucial for creating a dementia-inclusive society, improving the well-being of individuals with dementia and their caregivers, and addressing the challenges posed by this complex condition.

Giving Activity

Mission

Dementia Friendly Denton County assists our community with training and guidance to better serve the needs of those who live with dementia and their care partners.

Needs

As an all-volunteer organization, our commitment is deeply personal. Every member of our board has been touched by dementia, either through a loved one’s journey or a personal diagnosis. We’ve felt the heartache, the uncertainty, and the overwhelming need for support. We know firsthand how vital it is to have resources, understanding, and the comfort of knowing you are not alone in this difficult journey. That’s why we rely on the generosity of our community to help us continue funding programs that raise awareness and provide critical support for those living with dementia and their caregivers. Together, we can offer hope, compassion, and connection when it’s needed most.

What we need your support for:

Expansion of the Dementia-Friendly Nature Walk, renamed Wellness and Nature in 2024: In partnership with 12 nature parks across the county, we are expanding this initiative to provide more opportunities for individuals with dementia and their caregivers to engage with nature in a supportive environment.

Dementia-Friendly Training for Businesses throughout Denton County: These trainings equip businesses to create environments where individuals with dementia feel welcomed and supported. This includes making physical spaces more navigable, providing clear signage, and training staff to interact with empathy and understanding.

Support Groups for Individuals Living with Dementia and Their Caregivers: In moments of vulnerability, access to resources and knowing you are not alone can make all the difference. This is why we dedicate ourselves to creating programs that raise awareness and provide essential support for those living with dementia and their loved ones who care for them.

Community Outreach and Resources: Through outreach, we raise awareness, dispel misconceptions, and educate the public on how to better understand and assist those living with dementia. By engaging with the community, we foster a culture of empathy and inclusivity, ensuring that individuals with dementia and their caregivers feel valued, respected, and supported. Outreach efforts also help connect families with essential resources and services, creating a network of care that extends beyond the walls of any single organization.

With your help, we can make a significant difference in the lives of those impacted by dementia and foster a more compassionate and supportive community for everyone.
