The Greater Denton Arts Council has served the Denton Community for over 50 years supporting and providing a platform for all artistic mediums including visual arts, theatre, live music, dance, and written word. Housed in the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center (PAAC)—the City of Denton's original diesel fueled steam electric plant which opened in 1929 and renovated in the 1980's to become a visual arts center—GDAC embodies the rich and layered history of Denton's creative endeavors.
Our three galleries display work from local and regional artists with shows rotating every few months. The work ranges from local schools to international juried exhibitions, giving all artists opportunities to display and celebrate their art. GDAC also expanded partnerships with five "sister galleries": local businesses and organizations where we supply collections of work from our artist members. These partnerships provide the opportunity to further connect artists with the community, increase visibility of their work, and continue growing the presence of art in the greater Denton area.
We strive to make art accessible to all members of the community with free admission to our galleries, workshops, and programming. Through microgrants, we offer funding directly to Denton artists to support their projects in any medium. This year we're thrilled to have awarded grants to eight different creatives whose projects range from musical performance to dance to sculptural installations.
Since the beginning of 2024, GDAC has welcomed a new executive director, Krissi Oden, and started renovations all around the PAAC to modernize our galleries while preserving the historic integrity of the building. We invite you to see the stunning remodel of our Meadows Gallery upon the opening of the upcoming 30 Under 30 exhibition on August 19th - an exhibit which showcases the talents and vision of 30 Texas artists under 30 years old.
More exciting events on the horizon for GDAC for the rest of 2024 and into 2025 include; First Friday free performances, a community graffiti workshop, Splash! - an interactive dance and art experience, summer art camp, Electric! Light Installation Exhibit, our 38th annual Materials: Hard + Soft Contemporary Craft & Conceptual Art Exhibition, a community art festival, Beyond the Frame, an exhibit celebrating new media, and partnerships with local schools, universities, and community organizations.
All of this is possible because of the generosity of donors and supporters, so a giant thank you to everyone who is part of our GDAC family.
The Greater Denton Arts Council is a catalyst for creativity, advocacy and collaboration. The Patterson-Appleton Arts Center is our home where we celebrate the arts, inspire innovation and engage with the community through educational programs, and dynamic events for visitors of all ages.
Our Needs
The Arts Council appreciates your generous donation to help us grow public programs for children and families and support local artists and arts organizations. Here are just a few of the ways you can help:
Funding for Programs
GDAC provides art experiences for visitors of all ages through a variety of programs including Summer Art Camp, First Friday Performance Spotlight, Thursday late nights, and projects in collaboration with Denton Independent School District, UNT, TWU, and NCTC. Funding allows us to purchase the needed supplies as well as pay artists and musicians a fair rate.
Funding for exhibitions:
GDAC hosts over 20 exhibitions throughout the year of local, national, and international artists and 8 locations across the city of Denton including the Murchison Performing Arts Center at the University of North Texas, The Discover Denton Visitors Center, Embassy Suites Convention Center, North Texas Oncology, Sweetwater Tea and Coffee, Black Locust Studio, Stoke, and the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center. Our exhibitions showcase talent from young elementary school students all the way up to masters of craft and art. Our upcoming exhibitions for the fall include Splash! An interactive dance, music, and painting exhibit, 30 Under 30 which showcases the art of local artists under 30 years old, high school work focusing on Dia de los Muertos, and the Cassie Arnold group highlighting fiber works focusing on the act of caretaking.
Funds for exhibitions would go towards supplies, promotional marketing, recording equipment for online tours and programs, and helping provide scholarships for artists for Materials Hard + Soft, our international craft exhibition.
