Imagine what it would be like to live in fear every minute of your life, even while you're sleeping. Imagine having to constantly worry about the safety of your children when they're at home. Imagine if you were told every day that you weren’t worth anything better, and that you deserve what's happening. Imagine being told that there is no help and there is no hope.
In Texas, 1 in 3 women will experience domestic abuse in her lifetime. Abuse comes in many forms – financial, verbal, emotional, physical and even spiritual. Domestic violence is not a fight that got out of control. It is all about power and control.
For forty years, Genesis has provided no-cost services to support every woman and child’s unique needs as they heal from the trauma of abuse. Using Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, we meet her where she is and provide comprehensive care like advocacy, counseling, occupational therapy, legal services and more so she can achieve her goals.
Last year alone, we saw 3,700 women and children at our emergency shelter, transitional housing apartments, and nonresidential counseling offices. Our team of trauma-informed counselors, advocates, attorneys, teachers, occupational therapists and more aim to walk alongside each woman to affirm her that she is not alone and she deserves to feel safe and happy.
Genesis Women’s Shelter was founded with a goal to not just help women, but to completely eradicate domestic violence. We have formulated our services to address the issue holistically and give each woman the same message: there is help and there is hope. This year for North Texas Giving Day, join us in raising life-saving funds for the women and children we serve to send the message that there is help and there is hope.
To provide safety, shelter and support to women and children experiencing domestic violence, and to raise awareness regarding its cause, prevalence and impact.
Genesis’ core mission is to empower women and children by offering safety, shelter and support. In that same regard, we strive to create a workplace as diverse as the communities we serve and where everyone feels empowered to be their full, authentic selves. With these guiding principles, we commit to inclusion across race, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation, identity and experience so we may listen, learn, work together and succeed as a team.
