Girls Rock Dallas provides a day camp to girls, trans and gender-expansive youth, ages 8-17. With the help of qualified volunteers, campers learn an instrument (guitar, bass, drums, keyboards or vocals), form a band with others in their age group and experience level, and write a song together that they'll perform onstage in front of family members and friends. Each camper also has the opportunity to attend a variety of life-skill and technical workshops including self-defense, songwriting and media literacy.
We strive to empower campers through music education and creativity, thereby cultivating higher self-esteem and confidence. By providing the campers a safe, female-oriented environment we allow them to fully express themselves without the worries of negative peer pressure or judgment. Our program allows girls of all populations to have access to a professional musical education, thereby cultivating their creative side.
Our goal is to never turn a camper away due to lack of funds. Financial assistance is available, and any camper whose family requests free lunch during the school year can receive lunch during camp. (Every camper receives breakfast and snacks.) This year, campers and volunteers had the opportunity to borrow GRD instruments and equipment till the start of next year's camp.
Our core values include inclusion, diversity, collaboration, fighting sexism, social change and expanding opportunities for girls, women, trans and gender-expansive youth.
Since we are an all-volunteer organization, all of our donations go directly back into our organization and summer camp programming. This past summer, 81% of our campers received some sort of financial assistance and we hope to bring our programming to other individuals that may not currently have an opportunity like this. It is our hope that any additional donations that we receive will go towards future year-round programming including after-school programming, mini-camps and community workshops.
