About Our Organization:

Welcome to the HeadFirst Mental Health Initiative organization page, and thank you for considering mental health and wellness in part of your philanthropic giving! We are a hyper-local Dallas based nonprofit aimed reducing the mental health disparities for marginalized populations and making quality mental health accessible for all. We do this by providing free community education, outreach services, and mental health counseling services to families who would otherwise not be able to afford to pay out of pocket for counseling treatments.

We partner with the most qualified clinicians in the community and place clients within our program in existing private practices around town, with the nonprofit covering the cost of the counseling sessions on the behalf of the families receiving services.

Your donation to our organization helps to directly fund more therapy sessions for more families, helping to expand our services and help more families in Dallas receive the quality mental health treatments they deserve.

Tackling the mental health crisis in Dallas and reducing mental health disparities for marginalized and underserved populations by providing free comprehensive, evidenced-based mental health resources, treatment, and education.

The HeadFirst Mental Health Initiative (HMHI) is a mental health non-profit (501c3) aimed at reducing the burden of mental health in underserved populations in Dallas through providing community outreach, public education, and evidenced-based mental health treatment at no cost to families.

How it works:

  • Families reach out to our nonprofit and our team facilitates the initial screening, intake, and assessment process

  • If the family meets eligibility, they are paired with a provider in the area, or placed on a temporary waitlist if we are at capacity

  • Once the match is made, the family begins weekly counseling with their provider- free of cost to the family.

  • The provider sends the monthly bill to the nonprofit, and the nonprofit covers the cost of therapy on behalf of the family.

  • The provider collects weekly and monthly assessments from the client or family, and sends these assessments to the nonprofit so that our team can track progress and collect data to ensure our programs are beneficial and hitting treatment goals.

  • The nonprofit acts as the middleman, raising funds which are used to directly cover the cost of therapy for families who could otherwise not afford to receive those services.

This method of providing services is mutually beneficial for both provider and family, leading to a sustainable way of providing quality, evidenced-based mental health treatments to underserved populations most in need.

Main Features of our Program:

  1. Therapy is provided for the family for as long as it is needed given the family is motivated and showing up to session each week.
  2. Eligibility is based on motivation and desire to do the work in therapy once extreme crisis situations are resolved (meaning, we do not accept anyone who is currently homeless, in extreme crisis, currently abusing or history of drug use or abuse, or would be better helped through a hospital stay).
  3. Once treatment goals have all been met, the client ends their counseling with our nonprofit and the funding is released to help the next client on our waitlist.

Services and Programs

HMHI provides the following services free to children, adolescents, teens, parents, and families in the Dallas area:

  1. Play Therapy
  2. Adolescent and Teen Therapy
  3. Parenting Support and Coaching
  4. Community Education
  5. Clinical Training and Education for Providers
  6. Community Outreach Services

Mission

The HeadFirst Mental Health Initiative (HMHI) was established to raise public awareness of the current mental health crisis in the Dallas and surrounding areas and provide mental health education and services to those most in need.

Needs

We are currently in need of funding to continue providing free mental health counseling to families in our program.

With continued donations, we will be able to move more clients off of our waitlist and place them with experienced clinicians in the community who are eager to help but can not afford to take on clients pro bono.

Your donation helps cover the cost of the therapy session so that the clinician continues to be paid a living wage, and the funding from the nonprofit covers the cost of therapy for the family, thus ensuring the treatments are free to families within our program.

Continued funding will also help us pay an equitable wage for administrative, operating, printing, and marketing costs to keep our nonprofit going and increase our visibility in the community.

Due to our sustainable system of placing families within our program with existing therapists in the community, we are able to dramatically reduce our overhead costs so that the vast majority of charitable donations go directly to funding therapy sessions for families who would otherwise not be able to afford them.
