Joni and Friends Texas Warrior Getaway offers hope and healing to veterans and their families who live with the visible and invisible wounds of war. At Texas Warrior Getaway, veterans begin the healing journey from Post Traumatic Stress, Traumatic Brain Injuries, Moral Injuries, and other physical and emotional wounds.
For the 350,000 Texas military veterans living with cognitive and physical disabilities, nearly 80% of military marriages end in divorce, and every day 21 warriors end their pain by ending their own lives. TX Warrior Getaway gives veterans an opportunity to process their experiences through a program founded in Christ. “Our goal is to help veterans move from post-traumatic stress to post-traumatic growth,” says veteran and counselor, Cedric. “And we’re giving them the tools to do so.”
Texas Warrior Getaway supports veterans, preserves marriages, and strengthens families impacted by disability. At Texas Warrior Getaway, families:
· Experience a safe environment on their healing journeys.
· Participate in a loving and authentic temporary community that promotes acceptance and a non-judgmental environment.
· Receive tools that promote healing from spiritual and moral injuries and physical wounds from combat trauma and Post Traumatic Stress.
· Access meaningful, fully adaptive, and traditional camp activities for children.
· Receive much-needed calm and rest from very chaotic lives.
· Experience a Christ-focused and Christ-centered environment where healing begins to take place.
Joni and Friends was founded in 1979 by Joni Eareckson Tada, best-selling author and teacher, and one of the world’s leading international advocates for people living with disability. A diving accident in 1967 left Joni, then 17, quadriplegic and in a wheelchair. After two years of rehabilitation, she emerged with a fresh determination to help others in similar situations.
Joni and Friends serves communities throughout the United States through 20 local Area Ministry offices, including Texas. Since 1997, Joni and Friends Texas has served more than 6,500 families, veterans, caregivers, and children living with disability throughout the state and surrounding communities.
