Literacy Achieves (founded as Vickery Meadow Learning Center) was established in 1997 to help adults learn English in Vickery Meadow, a low-income neighborhood with thousands of immigrants and refugees. Today, Literacy Achieves serves 1083 adult students and 277 young children annually at campuses in Dallas neighborhoods of highest need and online. Approximately 230 dedicated volunteers teach all adult classes, providing respect and encouragement to the students.
Literacy Achieves employs a two-generation approach to learning, equipping both parents and their children with literacy skills needed to improve their lives and create a pathway out of poverty for the entire family. According to the National Institutes of Health, a mother's reading level is the single greatest determinant of her child's future academic success, outweighing all other factors, such as neighborhood and family income.
