In the early morning hours of Monday, June 28, 2021, beloved daughter Megan lost her battle with mental illness. Despite receiving treatment, counseling, and the unwavering love of family and friends, she struggled with depression and anxiety for many years.  At only 20 years old, Megan had a bright future, but the weight of her illness obscured that potential from her view.

Just before the first anniversary of Meg’s passing, her mom went on a girls trip to Savannah which provided the inspiration for what would become Meg Matters.  Each woman on the trip knew Meg personally and had also experienced their own struggles with mental health, either personally or within their family.  Amidst the historical sites and delicious food, the laughs and tears gave way to honest conversations and from the ashes came a desire to help others in their journey with mental health, and to hopefully prevent another family from enduring the relentless grief of losing someone to this terrible illness.

In honoring Megan's memory, Meg Matters is committed to extending a compassionate hand to those in need and advocating for a culture where love comes first and kindness always matters.

Mission

At Meg Matters, our mission is to empower lives through inspiration, education, and community, both online and in daily life. We strive to create a safe haven where individuals find connection, support, and resources to better navigate the road of mental health.

Recognizing that mental health impacts everyone, we fundraise and advocate for programs supporting mental health and suicide prevention, with a special focus on youth and school-aged children. We are dedicated to bringing comprehensive mental health education and resources to all, actively engaging in the ongoing effort to promote well-being and resilience in our communities.

Needs

Meg Matters seeks ongoing support for it’s mental health and suicide prevention programs and initiatives focused on children and teens in Denton county. We support schools’ mental health programs and initiatives, while also engaging in the community at large through outreach programs and media.

In the latest report from the CDC, more than 4 in 10 (42%) students felt persistently sad or hopeless and nearly one-third (29%) experienced poor mental health and more than 1 in 5 (22%) students seriously considered attempting suicide and 1 in 10 (10%) attempted suicide.

The CDC reported in 2022 that since the pandemic started, mental health-related visits to hospital emergency rooms rose 24% for children ages 5-11 and 31% for children ages 12-17 compared with data from 2019.

Equity Statement

At Meg Matters, we believe in the value and worth of each individual regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, age, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, or ability, and work to help a community in which all people have equitable access to mental health resources and support. We are committed to ensuring that our interactions and programs are accessible, affirming, and responsive to the diverse needs of individuals and communities affected by mental health challenges.
