Give the children their moms back, whole and healthy.

TRAUMA is real! If left unattended, it will consume the traumatized and impact everyone around them. Children are resilient but they suffer the impact of the trauma, too. Mercy's Shore is here to address the impact of trauma on children and their previously incarcerated moms, in a residential, Christ-centered program where all involved, staff and volunteers, are committed to understanding and avoiding the re-traumatization of those we serve.

The moms who will come to Mercy’s Shore, historically, have had substance abuse issues and have made other poor choices. Seeking assistance to overcome the past is generally thought of as courageous, strong, desirable. It requires a willingness to be vulnerable and admit shortcomings and failures of the past. Manipulation, deception, belittling and demeaning, each an example of abuse and trauma, when employed against those in such a vulnerable state are never acceptable. Join Mercy's Shore in bringing a better tomorrow to children and their previously incarcerated moms. Help us make trauma a distant memory.

Individual, weekly counseling with a licensed professional counselor will be provided to each school-aged child (younger, if indicated and appropriate) and each mom, to provide a new framework for thinking about themselves, their past, and their future. Boundaries and personal values will be addressed to protect against future traumatization.

Trauma can interfere with the absorption of new skills and knowledge, and the development of new talents. As a result, many moms will come to Mercy's Shore with limited to very limited job and life skills. Most of them have no idea what they are capable of or what they might have an interest in doing for a living. Mercy's Shore will help them identify their aptitudes and interests, and then focus in on instruction which will provide the needed skills to pursue a job which will pay a livable wage.  "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."  (Mrs. Dymond, Anna Isabella Ritchie (1885))

"Children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see."  (Neil Postman)
