Our Community Law

A nonprofit organization

$5,000 Goal

We are a law firm organized as a nonprofit committed to serving other nonprofits.

Nonprofits in North Texas avoid engaging lawyers because lawyers are expensive; additionally, finding lawyers with actual nonprofit expertise can present an insurmountable challenge.  This avoidance only exacerbates an already unhealthy circumstance as legal issues fester, options for minimizing adverse impact diminish, and nonprofits continue to spiral out of compliance with fundamental tax and legal obligations. Those nonprofits that don’t rely on avoidance rely on pro bono legal services. Attracted by free representation, they are served by junior lawyers without relevant  nonprofit and tax-exempt organization expertise, stand last in line for those services, and possess no leverage to receive better service.

Subsidized through donations and grants, Our Community Law offers below-cost legal advice and benefits nonprofit organizations in several ways, including:

Continuous Support. Having a dedicated legal team always available to address a nonprofit organization’s concerns reduces undiscovered issues and avoids unexpected surprises.

Proactive Legal Advice. Regular check-ins and ongoing support help identify legal and  compliance issues as they arise, ensuring that nonprofit organizations remain protected and  compliant.

Predictable Costs. With a set, recurring monthly fee, nonprofit organizations can effectively budget their legal expenses without worrying about unexpected legal bills.

Through our flat monthly rates, we offer cost-effective legal solutions and resources, along with a vibrant community platform where nonprofits can connect, share resources, and collaborate.

Mission

Our Community Law provides essential legal and business services to qualifying nonprofit organizations that they would not otherwise have access to. Our Community Law's mission is to assist these organizations in building organizational capacity and creating and implementing internal governance, accounting, and compliance policies and practices. This enables and empowers these organizations to provide higher quality social services or charitable programs to more charitable beneficiaries. Participating in Our Community Law's programs makes them better-run organizations capable of attracting more funding to support their exempt purposes and activities. In many instances, although these organizations are willing and able to provide charitable programs and services that are desperately needed in their communities, they are unable to attract available funding to do so because they lack the business maturity to convince potential funders that they can successfully implement their charitable programs.

Needs

Our Community Law can use your support for its 2 main programs:

1. Legal and business services program (this is our discounted legal services offering)

2. Educational and capacity-building programs. This includes:

a. Forms Library. An expansive, searchable, downloadable library of common legal documents allowing self-service problem solving. This library will be offered to the public through our website.

b. Content Library. Regular, detailed analyses of current topics in nonprofit law. A maintained archive will provide searchable access to a library of legal video content, educational materials, and news items. This library will be offered to the public through our website.

c. User Forums. User-created forums where nonprofits can confer on best practices, align interests, and check in with peers. These forums will be offered to our program participants online in North Texas through our website.

Equity Statement

Our firm is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where all nonprofits have equal access to our legal services. We are committed to a nondiscriminatory application process that welcomes organizations from all communities, with a special focus on supporting those that have been historically underrepresented or marginalized. Our goal is to ensure that every nonprofit, regardless of its resources or identity, can obtain the legal support needed to advance its mission and contribute to a more just and equitable society.
