The Military Order of the Purple Heart is unique among all veteran service organizations in that our membership is comprised entirely of combat veterans who were wounded in action and received the Purple Heart Medal. Chartered by Congress in 1958, The Military Order of the Purple Heart is composed of military men and women who received the Purple Heart Medal for wounds suffered in combat. Although our membership is restricted to the combat wounded, we support all veterans and their families with a myriad of nation-wide programs by our Chapters. DFW Mid-Cities Chapter 1513 is one of the largest chapters in North Texas. We are proudly part of the State of Texas' Purple Heart chapters and we were chartered (began) in August  2013, and now have over 520 Purple Heart Recipients as members. Texas represents the largest living population of Purple Heart recipients within the geographic region of the United States. The State of Texas has approximately 47,000 LIVING recipients of the Purple Heart.

Veterans Critical Needs Program

DFW Mid-Cities Chapter 1513 Critical Needs Program

"I will never leave a fallen comrade" is our Purple Heart Chapter's number one goal. We have 520 Purple Heart Recipients in our chapter, but will assist all veterans, from any service branch, who honorably served in the US Military.  To provide assistance, we rely upon donors like you, to empower us in support of veterans in need in North Texas and surrounding counties.  We have a very open inclusion policy, and we authenticate that all funds are disbursed for true dire emergencies, and that those receiving support, are in fact US veterans, irrespective of military branch or conflict served.

Expenses and Financial Emergencies Eligible for payment: Household expenses - mortgage, rent, repairs, insurance. Vehicle expenses - payments, insurance, repairs (major repairs for vehicles over ten years old will not be considered). Utilities. Food and clothing. Children's clothing, diapers, formula, school uniforms or childcare expenses. Funeral Expenses - ie for cremation or burial military uniforms or medals.  Our evaluation process is to evaluate the veterans income, and the emergency at hand.  Our board meets monthly to determine who is eligible.  After the board signs off it is legitimate, we pay the bill directly to the company - on behalf of the veteran.  Ensuring the veteran is strengthened emotionally with financial coaching, and the support he / she may need to weather a future financial crisis.

Why this is an especially critical for combat veterans who suffered wounds of war: The impact of combat trauma on the brain, and the social stigma of being a "wounded in combat" often leads to economic insecurity of combat wounded vets. If a combat wounded veteran has a relatively minor financial emergency, such as a car breaking down and needing repairs, keeping quiet about it, until it becomes a crisis, they are four times more likely to become homeless or suffer a mental health breakdown, within the year than the non-combat wounded veteran with the same type of emergency.

Stigma: A combat wounded veteran fears admitting to a financial emergency to civilians or non-combat veterans. The combat veteran will hide, and never, ever say a word, to avoid the agonizing shame of being tagged with the "damaged goods" moniker or be shunned by non combat veterans and stigmatized publicly.

Mental Health Risk: There is research evidence that financial strain or sudden emergency on a combat veteran can also lead to suicide. For some, they rationalize, rather than being a financial burden on their families, they view themselves as "disabled / broken", combat wounded veterans are at very high risk for a mental health breakdown. Our mission is to never, ever, leave any veteran behind.  We provide a hand up, not a hand out.  We will provide immediate financial assistance with dignity and in private, as well as guidance to lessen the burden in times of critical financial emergency.

The Military Order of the Purple Heart - Chapter 1513's mission is never, ever, leave a veteran behind.  We provide a hand up, not a hand out.  As long as we have donors to empower us, we will provide immediate financial assistance with dignity and respect, as well as guidance to lessen the burden in times of critical financial emergencies.

Giving Activity

Mission

The mission of the Military Order of the Purple Heart is to foster an environment of goodwill and camaraderie among combat wounded veterans, promote patriotism, support veteran related initiatives, and most importantly, provide services to all veterans and their families.

Needs

The Veteran Critical Needs Program consumes much of our chapters resources. A combat wounded veteran fears admitting to a financial emergency to civilians or NON COMBAT veterans. The combat Veteran will hide, and never, ever say a word, to avoid the agonizing shame of being tagged with the "damaged goods" moniker or be shunned and stigmatized. There is evidence that a financial strain on a combat veteran can also lead to homelessness and suicide. For some, they rationalize, rather than being a financial burden on their families, disabled / broken, and they are at high risk for suicide to assist their family financially. Expenses Eligible for payment: Household expenses - mortgage, rent, repairs, insurance. Vehicle expenses - payments, insurance, repairs (major repairs for vehicles over ten years old will not be considered). Utilities. Food and clothing. Children's clothing, diapers, formula, school or childcare expenses. Funeral Expenses - ie for cremation or burial uniforms.

Equity Statement

The Military Order of the Purple Heart is Chartered by Congress for combat wounded Veterans regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, gender status, age (over 40), disability, genetic information, or military conflict in which the member served. The Organization is composed of military service members who received the Purple Heart Medal for wounds suffered in combat or by an act of international terrorism. Diversity and inclusion in the Military Order of the Purple Heart are moral imperatives - to ensure every member of our organization is treated with dignity and respect.
