๐Ÿ“š WHO WE ARE:

Reading to New Heights provides the fundamentals of reading for adults at no cost via 1:1, confidential and virtual tutoring sessions conducted by certified educators. The curriculum that our educators teach from allows our adult learners to revisit the fundamentals of reading and comprehension as if they are learning it for the first time. Learning basic reading foundations such as phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, spelling, vocabulary and comprehension are exactly what adults struggling with illiteracy need in order to build competent literacy skills and fill the gaps that illiteracy causes in education. We have removed the financial barrier that many adults face when they seek such a service. Adult illiteracy refers to the incapacity of adults to read, write, or comprehend information sufficiently to fully participate in society and achieve their personal goals. It is a lack of basic literacy skills that are necessary for everyday activities such as reading signs, completing forms, understanding instructions, or writing letters.

๐Ÿ“š WHY WE DO IT:

Adult illiteracy can severely limit individuals' opportunities for education, employment, and overall social and economic participation.

There are different levels and types of illiteracy that vary depending on the context and criteria used for assessment. Some adults may be completely non-literate, meaning they have no reading or writing skills at all, while others may possess minimal or basic literacy skills. Additionally, illiteracy can also include the inability to comprehend and apply information effectively.

Illiteracy can result from various factors, including limited access to quality education, socioeconomic disadvantages, cultural barriers, language barriers, learning disabilities, or a lack of encouragement and support.

Adult illiteracy is a significant global issue, affecting millions of people around the world. Our efforts to address adult illiteracy here at Reading to New Heights is just one of the many initiatives aimed at expanding access to quality education for adults.

Mission

To create a safe place for adults to learn and improve their literacy skills to maximize their potential in society and gain the confidence that ensures a better quality of life.

Needs

We aim to serve 20 more learners is year through NTX Giving Day, so we need to hire part-time, certified instructors to support them. We have to grow, and we cannot succeed without you. Your donation will have a considerable impact.

On average, it costs $1,160 to support a learner for 6-month, with a goal of mastering at least a 9th-grade reading level. If you are not able to give that much, here are other ideas of how smaller gifts can still make considerable impacts:

๐Ÿ“š A $500 gift provides access to a virtual one-on-one learning platform
