Rescuing Leftover Cuisine Dallas

A nonprofit organization

Rescuing Leftover Cuisine is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit food-recovery organization that strives to eliminate food waste in local communities and make food rescue sustainable and universal. We use a responsive web application to organize our food rescues to ensure reliability, accessibility, and convenience. Headquartered in New York, the organization currently has 13 branches across the country and has collectively rescued over 5 MILLION POUNDS OF FOOD since its inception in 2013. This has resulted in over 4.5 million meals to those most in need. RLC Dallas distributes our rescued food to local organizations who has the proper space and refrigeration and freely serve food to those in need. This allows our Food Recipient partners to fully focus on the people they serve, save money and time, and have peace of mind.

Nearly 133,000,000,000 pounds of perfectly edible food that gets wasted. At the same time, food insecurity affects 1 in 7 people in the United States. In Dallas County alone, food insecurity rate is almost 16% which affects nearly 392,000 people (Source: Food Insecurity Rate for North Texas). When we throw food away, we're also throwing away the energy, water, packaging, time, and investments we used towards creating that food. Uneaten food is also the single largest component of municipal solid waste. And when food is piled on top of each other in landfills and lacks the room to properly aerate, it forms methane which is a greenhouse gas that's 84x more powerful than carbon dioxide. Reducing food waste is the 3rd most impactful solution to global warming. (Source: NRDC).

When you support Rescuing Leftover Cuisine, you're helping fight food insecurity, combat homelessness, protect the environment, save freshwater, and feed meals to those most in need.

Our Needs

RLC Dallas currently has 2 needs:
1) Support for operations
RLC Dallas is trying to expand our network to try and connect more businesses with local food pantries, kitchens, and homeless shelters. Due to COVID-19, we are waiving our usual food pickup fees that help sustain our branch's operations and expenses, but it greatly limits our ability to scale. With the number of families and individuals needing food, our services are needed more than ever.

2) Support for a unique meal program
In addition to rescuing food that is unfit to be sold from vendors, we hope to also roll out a meal program where we purchase meals at reduced costs from local restaurants so we can give quality meals to those most in need while also supporting our community.

All the money we raise through NTX Giving Day will go towards these two needs.

Mission

Our mission is to fight hunger with food waste.

We leverage technology to eliminate food waste and distribute wholesome meals to communities who need it most.
