Soroptimist International of the Americas has about 1,300 clubs in 21 countries and territories who work to economically empower women and girls. The Rockwall Club was chartered in 1984 and our members are active or retired dynamic business and professional women.

Our name is coined from the Latin words soro and optima and means best for women.

Club Rockwall Projects

The Children's Advocacy Center for Rockwall County occupies The Soroptimist House, and is our main service project. Soroptimists have subsidized the rents and utilities from the very beginning of the project. We will continue to raise funds, volunteer and assist the CAC in any way we can to help provide much needed services to the children of Rockwall County who are victims of sexual abuse, assault and neglect. We are very proud to be a Founding Member of the Children's Advocacy Center for Rockwall County.

STARS stands for Soroptimist Toasting Area Retired Seniors. Once per quarter and at Thanksgiving and Christmas, our Club members celebrate the birthdays of the seniors living at Reese Manor (Gov't Low Cost Housing on Lake Meadows) with a themed Sunday luncheon prepared by the Club members and gift cards amounting to $150/per resident each year.

Susan Faulkner Memorial Scholarships are given in May to senior high school girls in 3 local high schools. The memorial scholarships are named after member Dr. Susan Faulkner, a professor at Trinity College.

Live your Dream are monetary awards given to women who provide the primary financial support for their family and are enrolled in or accepted to a program to improve their education, skills and employment prospects.

Dream it, Be It: Career Support for Girls, targets girls in secondary school who face obstacles to their future success. It  provides girls with access to professional role models, career education and resources to live their dream.

International Goodwill: We support women entrepreneurs that are looking to create a better future for themselves and their families.

Mission

A global volunteer organization that provides women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment.

Needs

We rely on donations and support from our community to help us with our many projects and programs. Last year we gave 7 financial awards totaling $17,000 to women pursuing education to reach their dreams and gave $15,000 in scholarships to local high school girls. We are expanding our Dream It, Be It program for teen girls and need additional funds to make a greater impact. We have collaborated with local high schools and youth serving organizations. We also need more volunteers and hope if you are a woman in our community that is passionate about our mission that you will consider becoming a member.

Equity Statement

For almost 100 years, Soroptimist has worked to create a better world for women and girls. Diversity and Fellowship is one of the core values that drives our work, and we model it in our membership, the women and girls we serve, and our hiring practices. It pains us to see racial injustice and violence of any kind. While we are living through confusing times right now, where consensus is often hard to find, we remain committed to working for a more just and equal world. We urge introspection and collaboration on ways we can work together to fix systems that do not serve all of us equally. We know that many of the women and girls we serve face inequality because of their race or ethnicity, as well as their gender. We will continue to do our part and contribute positively to our communities, nations and the world by helping women and girls to reach their full potential by getting the education they need to achieve economic empowerment.

Right now, we urge calm, empathy and kindness. In the words of Abraham Lincoln, "We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature."
