About Us
Special Abilities of North Texas provides daytime support services to people with diagnoses including autism,
Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other developmental disabilities. Our five
focus areas are Vocational and Prevocational Training, Independent Living
Skills, Creative Arts, Community Inclusion, and Health and Fitness. The program
is designed to help clients achieve their goals while engaging in fun and
meaningful activities. A different theme provides opportunities to practice
skills in varying contexts each week. Clients and families report increased
self-esteem, independence, and overall health while attending Special
Abilities.
Ninety-five percent of the clients who attend Special Abilities do so without any out-of-pocket expense to their caregivers. Instead, we contract with Medicaid waiver providers to provide this essential service. On average, Special Abilities receives less than $24 per day per client that attends through Texas Medicaid waiver funding. As a nonprofit, we raise funds to combat the appallingly low reimbursement
rates from the state so that our clients can have the support, supplies, and
environment to help them succeed.
