In the 2020 US Census, roughly half a million Texans went uncounted. As a result, Texans lost out on nearly $25 billion of federal funding and lost one seat in the US House of Representatives. The Texas Census Institute (TxCI) was launched as a result to ensure that every Texan is counted and our state has the data and resources we need to continue to thrive.
With a booming economy, vibrant art and culture, and world-class outdoor experiences, Texas is the home of possibility and opportunity. That kind of success requires planning and hard work, and beginning with an accurate census where every Texan counts.
TxCI is the hub for all things census in Texas, dedicated to increasing participation in the annual American Community Survey and achieving a complete count in the 2030 US Census. TxCI’s work aims to increase statewide stakeholder engagement, build regional capacity, and support regular planning for the census with a goal of activating political support and state resources and focusing philanthropic investments on historically hard-to-count communities.
The Texas Census Institute accomplishes our mission through research, education, and partnerships.
RESEARCH:
With state and national partners, TxCI uses data to highlight the importance of the census to all regions of the state, the economy, and at-risk populations.
EDUCATION:
TxCI works to educate and inform policymakers at every level as to the importance of the census, with a goal of generating broad, non-partisan support.
PARTNERSHIPS:
Texas is huge and our population is diverse. To ensure we have the greatest reach, TxCI will partner with organizations representing regions, sectors, populations and more.
