Support Experiencing the Beauty of Motherhood, Without Fear

The Afiya Center (TAC) was founded in response to the increasing disparities between HIV incidences nationwide and the extraordinary prevalence of HIV among Black womxn and girls in Texas. We have long recognized that change can only occur when looking at the systemic and environmental concerns that position Black womxn to experience health disparities at higher rates than other individuals. TAC is unique because we serve as the only Black reproductive justice organization in North Texas. We intentionally prioritize our affinity to serve Black womxn, girls, femmes, and transgender/gender non-conforming people (TGNC) throughout the state, consistent and unapologetic in our quest to advocate for Black womxn in Texas.

We seek to assist Black womxn in elevating and addressing their day-to-day experiences as a historically marginalized group through the use of the reproductive justice lens, believing that this platform serves not only as an avenue for raising awareness but also for establishing true advocacy work rooted in self-actualization, powerful storytelling, and knowledgeable electoral engagement.

Oak Cliff Birth Center Saves Lives

On October 29th, 2022, The Afiya Center marked a momentous occasion—the grand opening of its office building and birth and wellness center, culminating 14 years dedicated to serving the community. Approaching nearly two years since its establishment, the center stands as a safe haven for Black womxn and birthing individuals seeking assistance with their reproductive care. Nestled in the heart of southern Dallas, The Afiya Center’s new office space serves as a sanctuary of healing and an avenue of accessibility for the local community, nurtured by individuals who mirror the very essence of the community they serve. Beyond this familiarity, they encounter an atmosphere steeped in respect, dignity, and compassion.

Within these walls, there is an abundance of offerings awaiting Black womxn and birthing individuals:

  1. Access to culturally attuned, transformative reproductive health initiatives.
  2. A reservoir of resources, invigorating yoga sessions.
  3. Compassionate doula services.
  4. Comprehensive prenatal and postpartum care.
  5. And, much more!

This endeavor bridges the gaps in care accessibility that have long eluded all members of the Black community. The mission of this space is steadfast—to ensure the flourishing of all Black womxn and birthing individuals, underpinned by the fundamental tenet of Reproductive Justice: to parent, to not parent, and to parent in safe and healthy environments.

As the vision for both the infrastructure and the organization unfurls, a tapestry of exciting possibilities beckons. As The Afiya Center continues its growth trajectory, this establishment stands firm, anchoring it to the very essence of its community.

Equity Statement

The Afiya Center uses the reproductive justice framework to address systemic oppression that impedes on the health and well-being of Black womxn. We seek to create an atmosphere where womxn’s experiences are the center of our thinking by addressing the unique needs of womxn, increasing awareness and advocacy around policies that impact their lives. Justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion is interwoven into the fabric of TAC. Through our programs, we have discovered to truly do revolutionary racial and gender justice work there must be an intention to address the “why, anti-Black racism”.

Anti-Black Racism is directly responsible for why Black communities generationally live in poverty, are politically disenfranchisement, are more likely to serve longer prison terms, die at the hands of law enforcement, and historically and presently suffer the most catastrophic illness and outcomes. By utilizing the Reproductive Justice framework, designed to organize for equitable access and wellbeing, we are able to examine these nuanced experiences and identify how reproductive oppression directly connects to public health and economic disparities of Black womxn, girls, femmes, and TGNC individuals at the intersections of race, class, and gender.

The Afiya Center staff and board is comprised of Black, queer, and gender non-conforming womxn, men, and people. TAC keeps Indigenous, immigrant, Trans, incarcerated, and birthing people front of mind.
