Our Community

Imagine a mother realizing too late that her son with a disability needed to be on the Texas Medicaid interest list 15 years ago. Or a grandmother travelng two hours for medical care due to a lack of providers accepting Medicaid. Consider a woman unexpectedly responsible for her sister’s care, navigating unfamiliar systems. Picture a woman with a disability losing her support and independence due to insufficient pay for care providers, leading to a tragic end in a nursing facility.

These stories are not isolated incidents; they reflect the daily struggles of millions of Texans with disabilities. At The Arc of DFW Area, we live these realities every day. Our mission is to empower individuals with disabilities to live life as they define it through advocacy, awareness, training, and support, ensuring they live fulfilling, self-determined lives.

Our Vision

The Arc of DFW Area envisions an inclusive society where people with disabilities make choices about their own communities, friendships, and opportunities.

Our Story

Founded in 1971 by dedicated families, The Arc of DFW Area has grown into a robust community of self-advocates, parents, family members, and allies. For over 50 years, we have worked tirelessly to expand opportunities for individuals with disabilities, driven by a shared passion for their rights and inclusion.

Our Challenge

Texas ranks near the bottom in providing community-based services for individuals with disabilities. The challenges include:

  • Complex Systems: Families struggle to navigate overly complicated government programs.
  • Long Wait Times: Decades-long waits for essential Medicaid services.
  • Insufficient Pay: A shortage of qualified, compassionate care providers due to inadequate compensation.
  • Lack of Opportunity: Limited employment and transportation options lead to isolation and poor health outcomes.

We advocate not only for increased funding but also for the reform and reallocation of resources from institutional to community-based services.

Our Future

The Arc of DFW Area is committed to transforming the disability landscape in Texas. Our initiatives include:

  • Building a Stronger Advocacy Network: Expanding our grassroots campaign to drive policy improvements.
  • Educational Outreach: Enhancing our successful A Look Ahead conferences and other educational offerings.
  • Digital Expansion: Boosting our online presence to share impactful stories and raise awareness.
  • New Programs: Developing initiatives to promote accessibility and inclusivity.
