What good is learning about native plants if you can't find any to plant? That’s why we host an annual native plant sale in the spring and collaborate with local nurseries through our NICE Native Plant Partner program to offer native plants that are right for our local environment.

Giving Activity

Mission

To promote the conservation, research and utilization of the native plants and plant habitats of North Central Texas, through education, outreach and example. To promote the installation and maintenance of pollinator gardens and monarch waystations across the area.

Our Vision

We envision a future where all Texans value native plants, habitats, and healthy ecosystems as essential components of our quality of life. We aim for a future where native habitats are managed as invaluable natural assets and where developments prioritize sustainable designs that preserve and promote these habitats.

Needs

A majority of the donations received during the North Texas Giving Day will go towards funding our chapter's grant program. Your generous contribution will help us spread the importance of native plants through community projects. The remaining donations will go to fund other activities listed below.

Funding for the North Central Texas Native Plant Art Exhibition. Art is made by over 800 fourth grade students. The art exhibition offers students an opportunity to learn about their natural world through art. The artwork is judged, ribbons are awarded and then continuously displayed at public sites from November through April. Display locations include the Denton Senior Center, the Blagg-Huey Library at Texas Woman's University, the Elm Fork Education Center at the University of North Texas, Denton's three public libraries, and the Redbud Festival. An Appreciation Reception is held to recognize the students and their art teachers and to thank the display site hosts.

Funding to provide plants for pollinator gardens in public spaces, including schools and parks. Native pollinators-bees, butterflies, moths, bats and birds-play a critical role in sustaining ecosystems and provide essential services to American agriculture (estimated at as much as $9 billion annually). Yet pollinators are in trouble. More than 50 native bees are in documented decline, with 9 critically imperiled. Another iconic North American pollinator-the monarch butterfly-is in severe decline, down from a billion monarchs 20 years ago to 35 million today. Our work to install plants necessary for the various species in this area helps to combat this decline.

Funding to support the NICE! Nursery project. NICE! Stands for Natives Improve and Conserve the Environment! The purpose of NICE! is to promote the use of native plants by raising awareness and educating area nurseries and the public about the benefits of growing native plants in residential and commercial landscapes. Trinity Forks Chapter has chosen to feature a local plant each season . An information sheet on these plants is developed, printed and laminated for display with nursery stock. Nurseries also receive a metal sign showing their participation in the program and a binder with information on all previous NICE! Selections and take-home information to provide their customers.
