At Valerie Gillespie Contemporary, our mission is to cultivate a vibrant and inclusive arts community in the city of Dallas. Through our artist residencies, workshops, and community engagement initiatives, we strive to foster creativity, empower artists, and inspire meaningful connections between creatives and the wider community. We provide exceptional opportunities for emerging, mid-career, and established artists to further develop their craft and explore new artistic horizons. Our artist residencies offer a supportive environment where artists can immerse themselves in their work, collaborate with leaders in the arts, and engage in critical dialogue and artistic experimentation.

In addition to our artist residencies, we are committed to offering a diverse range of workshops and educational programs that empower artists with the necessary skills, knowledge, and resources to thrive in today's art world. These workshops and events cover various artistic disciplines, including painting, sculpture, photography, and more. Through these educational endeavors, we aim to foster artistic growth, encourage interdisciplinary exploration, and nurture a lifelong passion for the arts.

At the heart of our organization lies a strong belief in the power of community engagement. We strive to connect artists with the broader Dallas community through exhibitions, public art projects, and interactive events. By facilitating these connections, we seek to create meaningful dialogues, promote cultural understanding, and inspire social change through the transformative power of art. With a commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment that celebrates diversity in all its forms, we actively seek to amplify underrepresented voices, support marginalized communities, and promote social justice through our programming and collaborations. We believe that art can transcend boundaries, challenge perspectives, and foster empathy, and we are dedicated to utilizing these qualities to promote positive change within our community. Valerie Gillespie Contemporary aspires to be a catalyst for artistic excellence, community engagement, and cultural enrichment in the city of Dallas. We strive to create a thriving ecosystem where artists can flourish, ideas can thrive, and the transformative power of art can be experienced by all.

Needs

In order to better support local artists through the artist in residency program at Valerie Gillespie Contemporary, the immediate needs for our nonprofit reside within financial support for the artists that participate in the annual artist residency program. Studio space and facilities need to be created that are well-equipped for residents to work in along with a dedicated space for residents to exhibit art throughout the residency. Funding acquired during this giving period will go towards creating a residency space and providing funding for artists for materials. In addition, funds raised will help ensure stipends for visiting curators, mentors and outside arts professionals that administer assistance to the artist in resident throughout the 4–8-week residency period. In addition, the day to day needs are in conjunction with staffing, maintenance of studio spaces, technology for administration, marketing, and the progression of our partnerships with area schools and organizations.

Equity Statement

Valerie Gillespie Contemporary is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment that champions the voices and talents of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) artists in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. We recognize the systemic barriers that have historically marginalized these communities and are committed to dismantling these obstacles through intentional actions and programs in the arts.
