Participants in VMYDF comprise 16 countries and cumulatively speak over 30 languages, with Spanish, Burmese, Rohingya, Chin, and Karenni being the most spoken languages besides English. Many families have recently arrived in the United States. In the Vickery Meadow neighborhood, where VMYDF focuses their programming, 50% of the households make less than $35,000/year. 100% of the Scholars in the VMYDF EAGLE Scholar program are first-generation college students.
Vickery Meadow Youth Development Foundation is deeply committed to serving the local community through a range of programs and activities designed to support students, families, and the community as a whole. Here are some of our key activities in the local community:
EAGLE SCHOLARS COLLEGE READINESS PROGRAM: connecting with over 200 middle, high school, and college students to help them successfully navigate the college process.
MOM'S GROUPS: engaging over 80 moms in weekly mom's groups focused on topics they request, providing a supportive environment for moms to connect and learn. Classes are held in Spanish, English, Burmese, and Dari, with plans to expand to other languages.
SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS: funding school trips to Washington D.C. and San Antonio for 60 7th and 8th graders from a local middle school to provide rich educational and cultural experiences.
COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS: organizing an annual Festival of Lights that pulls together over 15 nonprofits and engages the 30+ cultural groups in our Vickery Meadow neighborhood. In 2022, the 5th annual event boasted over 2000 in attendance. This event celebrates our community's rich cultural diversity and brings people together for an evening of music, food, and activities.
LANGUAGE INCLUSIVITY: offering a Language Justice workshop that equipped over 30 nonprofits to create a more inclusive environment that is more effective in serving families from diverse linguistic backgrounds.
Through these activities and more, VMYDF strives to make a meaningful difference in the lives of students, families, and the local community.
