Memories.
What is the first thought that comes to mind when you hear the word memories?
Is it an adventure you had with your childhood pet?
Is it the smell of a favorite home cooked meal?
Is it a memorable vacation?
One of the three major classifications of memory is sensory memory. Information from the world around us begins to be stored by sensory memory, making it possible for this information to be accessible in the future.
Through engagement, deep-seated memories are awakened, and in a sense, new life is experienced through fond memories and reminiscing. It's engagement, memories, and reminiscing that drive so many of our programs at CCC&S.
One critical need at CCC&S is the support of our Memory Care programs which nurture engagement, awaken & create memories, and embrace reminiscing.
Viola, and many other residents, participated in our first annual spelling bee just this year. Viola, a social, yet quiet person, quickly showed her competitive nature and was not shy when boldly calling out the spelling of each word the judges presented her. Viola and her team took first place, and it was after this spelling bee that she fondly shared her story of winning the spelling bee at her elementary school years earlier.
Sue, someone that rarely speaks clearly, is transformed when Willa and Walter (therapy dogs) make visits to see her and other residents. Her eyes light up, her smile is big, and her quiet demeanor fades away. Her clear, complete sentences are a welcomed surprise when she is loving on these dogs. It was during one of these pet therapy visits that Sue was able to reminisce and tell parts of her life story, which included highlights from her career as an air traffic controller in Houston, Texas.
Andrea, who dreams of going to the Bahamas, finally made her first visit with the help of the Rendever program. Using virtual reality, Rendever took Andrea aboard a yacht and deep into the water where she saw beautiful coral, fish of all sizes and colors, and finally to the beaches, where Andrea said, “It’s so real, that I can feel the sand and wind”.
CCC&S is known for its forward-thinking life enrichment programming, and the funds it takes to maintain state of the art programming are ever increasing. During moments like Viola's Spelling Bee, Sue's love for our dogs, and Andrea's dream trip are where old memories are shared, and new memories are made.
Purpose is found in these moments.
Joy is felt in these moments.
Will you provide these meaningful moments?
Christian Care Communities & Services are all about "caring." Enhancing the lives of seniors through spiritual, physical, social, and recreational programs is our "calling." Three communities throughout the Metroplex serve more than 1500 seniors annually in Allen, Fort Worth, and Mesquite.
In 1947, a young minister, Ralph Godfrey, heard the "call" to provide a home for the aged Christian men and women in North Texas. When the Godfrey's got asked years later why they sacrificed so much to care for retired ministers and their spouses, their response was, "we didn't see it as a sacrifice; it is what God 'called' us to do."
In 1968, big-hearted men and women across Dallas were inspired by the visionary minister Virgil Bentley, who saw a need for "Christian Care" for seniors in the Dallas area. The vision became a reality when the Christian Care Center opened its doors on the Mesquite campus in September 1973. The Mesquite campus includes: Retirement Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care Assisted Living, Rehabilitation, Nursing care, and outpatient therapy.
In 1981, Christian Care opened Lakewood Village to meet the needs of seniors in the Fort Worth area. The campus now serves over 400 seniors in Retirement, Assisted Living, Memory Care Assisted Living, and outpatient therapy.
To expand our reach, in 2006, Christian Care Hospice started as a service to help those who needed end-of-life care. Christian Care Hospice serves patients in our communities, Collin, Dallas, Rockwall, Tarrant counties, and other North Texas cities.
A need was noticed without a current location to the North of the Metroplex to add a third campus. A door was opened by the Greenville Oaks Church of Christ when they gifted 5.1 acres of land to Christian Care Communities & Services. After much prayer and a feasibility study confirming the need, construction began in Allen in 2014. In the Fall of 2016, the Allen campus opened its doors to include: Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care Assisted Living, and Outpatient Therapy.
Christian Care Communities & Services is a faith affirming ministry providing innovative and loving care for those we serve.
