Our Needs

The City of Rowlett has a population of 68,000 and growing, located in NE Dallas County on the shores of Lake Ray Hubbard.

Friends of the Rowlett Public Library promotes the library as an essential and vibrant learning institution for the community.  Friends is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, we advocate for the library’s success through fundraising, volunteer effort, and supporting library programs.  Our goal is to raise money to enhance the programs of the library, filling the needs of all library patrons, as well as some community service.

Our Friends group is the primary contributor to the Rowlett Public Library Summer Reading Program, which has between 1,500 and 2,500 participants a year.   We volunteer in many of the summer programs, and programs all year long.

Contributions from Friends help to fund the library’s after-school STEM programs including SPIKE robotics, 3D printing, and participation in LEGO robotics competition.

Friends supplements with books for the Senior Book Club, and the Second Saturday Book Club.

Other activities of our group outside the library:  Books for Babies program, which is an endeavor with Baylor Scott & White Medical Center Lake Pointe.  We furnish 70 packets of 2 books a month to new parents and babies to encourage literacy starting at birth.  We provide resources to these young families to encourage a love of books and using the library.  Also, twice a year we partner with Life Message, a non-profit who distributes food to those in need.  Families who come pick up food can choose books for their children to keep and enjoy.
