Junius Heights was created in 1906 on what was then the eastern edge of Dallas. Described as the greatest lot sale in the history of Dallas, two hundred lots were reportedly sold between 12:01 A.M. and 12:45 A.M. on September 3, 1906. Advertisements of the day promised that Junius Heights would become the choicest residential section of Dallas. The neighborhood was known for its large columns on Abrams and was served by the Junius Heights streetcar line until citywide service was discontinued.

Junius Heights has an active neighborhood association that obtained historic designation in May 2005, making it Dallas’ newest and largest historic district. It is the largest collection of Arts and Crafts/Craftsman homes in the southwest and includes Prairie and Tudor styles in a neighborhood of well over 800 homes in Old East Dallas, situated east of Munger Place, south of Swiss Avenue and southwest of Lakewood.

As a neighborhood organization, Junius Heights Historic District is focused on preserving the historic nature of our neighborhood, supporting Lipscomb Elementary and area schools, beautification and maintenance of the column parks on Abrams, representing the interests of Junius Heights residents and informing neighbors about community happenings. We sponsor several events each year to promote community and to showcase our neighborhood as a great place to live. These events include an Annual Home Tour, a Spring Fling neighborhood block party, a Winter Wonderland holiday party gathering in a city park, neighborhood movie nights and the East Dallas Games in conjunction with neighboring Districts.

  3. Determine the needs and goals of JHHD and to promote undertakings to satisfy such needs and achieve such goals, both within the District and the surrounding community.
  4. Preserve the identity, integrity, and historical significance of the properties within the boundaries of the neighborhood.
  5. Promote and encourage the safety, improvement, and beautification of JHHD and immediately surrounding community.
  6. Work in concert with the other Landmark Districts in East Dallas to preserve, protect and enhance our neighborhoods.

Mission

The Dallas City Council finds that the Property (i.e., Junius Heights) is an area of historical, cultural, and architectural importance and significance to the citizens of the city. Our Neighborhood organization is dedicated to promote, encourage and advocate Neighborhood Cohesiveness, Beautification of the District, Support Lipscomb Elementary as well as Lakewood Library and Historic Preservation by raising funds to financially support these projects in the community and institutions.

Needs

Junius Heights has many community outreaches. We have supported the food pantries at Lipscomb, Wilson, and Long serving the economically disadvantaged in East Dallas. We are a consistent contributor the Lipscomb PTA, Old East Dallas Early Childhood PTA, and Lipscomb Gardens. Junius Heights has provided gifts, classroom materials, and lunches to the faculty at Lipscomb, the school in the heart of our neighborhood.

We also provide resources for landscaping and maintenance of the Column Park, as well as the pocket parks that frame Abrams from the Dallas City Library to Beacon Street. The columns at Column Park, which once proudly announced your arrival to Junius Heights, are in need of significant repair, and are at risk of becoming a safety hazard to the community. Funds raised for the JHHD will go to restoration projects at Column Park, such as light fixture and stone-work repair. We hope funding will be allocated to restore these columns to allow future generations to enjoy this important piece of Junius Heights and Dallas history.

One of the only downsides to being a historic district is that our infrastructure sometimes shows its age. In particular, our aging green infrastructure is in need of funding to improve the amount of trees/green space in our community, and irrigation installation along Abrams Road, improving the Abrams Road Corridor through east Dallas.

Our annual fall home tour promotes our community: the homes, the people who live in them, and the businesses that support us. Profits from our Home Tour provides funding for our philanthropy projects but there is more needed.

Your contribution will help sustain the civic goals of Junius Heights ~ Capital for Teacher and Staff Support at Lipscomb Elementary, Friends of the Lakewood Library, landscape projects, amenities, parks and Preservation of Junius Heights.
