Luke's Story
In 2014, the Lange family heard the words no parent, sister, or child should ever have to hear, "Luke has cancer." At nine years old, Luke began his fight with his family at his side. Like many cancer patients, Luke courageously endured countless clinic visits, hospital stays, and chemotherapy infusions.
Early during Luke's treatment, he told his parents he could fight this battle, but he could not endure another day in the hospital gown. It made him feel sicker, and he just wanted to feel like a "normal" kid. Luke and his mom, Tracy, began brainstorming a solution while maintaining the functionality and purpose of a hospital gown. Small plastic snap strips were added to each side of his shirt to allow easy access to his port, promote normalization and allow Luke to continue to be a kid both in and out of the hospital. Thanks to simple alterations, Luke could ditch the faded grey, dress-like, open-back gown and continue wearing all his favorite shirts. Other patients immediately began asking about his snap shirts, which is how Luke's FastBreaks began.
We are thrilled to say that today, Luke is cancer-free! When Luke went into remission, he wanted to share his shirts with other patients, help them feel normal, and replace the dreaded hospital gown. Luke's FastBreaks received 501(c)3 status in 2016 and has sent out over 54,000 medical port shirts to children, adolescents and young adults fighting cancer.
