Refugee Resources is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit Christian ministry providing physical and spiritual aid to refugee families. We offer gospel-centered literacy/mentoring programs called Preschool Circle and Reading Circle to students who reside in Dallas, Texas. Refugee Resources is supported by and partners with numerous Christian organizations, including Eastside Community Church, Northwest Bible Church, Northway Church, Fellowship Bible Church Dallas, and Forefront Experience. We have over 80 volunteers participating weekly in our programs. Most of our volunteers are from our church partners and participate in the program from the overflow of their love for Jesus and are motivated to invest in the lives of children one child at a time.
The Preschool Circle is a school readiness program for 2-4-year-old children. During the Preschool Circle, students engage in a time of discovery with songs, games, and arts and crafts. The activities always center around pre-reading and pre-writing skills to learn shapes, colors, and alphabet letters. The Preschool Circle also teaches children social skills through learning how to be kind to one another and to engage in group activities. Parents and grandparents join in to help their little ones acculturate while building friendships with participants and volunteers.
The Reading Circle is structured to provide our students with individualized instruction from a consistent weekly mentor/literacy coach. Students are informally assessed by their mentor to attain their reading level. That information is used to help place the student on the correct level as they progress through decodable books, oral fluency, and leveled readers. Each student's progress is monitored through the program. Throughout the semester, students develop strong relational ties with mentors, which further encourages academic success.
All students are greeted warmly by the love of Jesus and know that our programs are a safe place for them. Reading Circle has seen the lives of countless non-readers, frustrated by daily life skills and challenged in their schoolwork, become thriving and confident students in the classroom and beyond. Mentors who have stepped out of their comfort zones have gained more than they imagined from their newfound friendships.
By building the capacity of refugee students, their families and communities are enhanced as they are better equipped to create a stable and viable future here in America. The Preschool Circle and Reading Circle equip refugee students to be the next generation of servant leaders by learning to live out the gospel, love their neighbor, and be empowered with literacy skills. We believe in and teach strong character development, responsibility, and a good work ethic. We celebrate positive character traits in students' lives and build confidence through one-on-one mentorships. Our goal is to transform students' lives one child at a time.
