Empowering Hispanic Women for Health Equity: Join Us on North Texas Giving Day

In Hispanic culture, women are the anchors of our families and community. They are decision makers, advocates, and, most profoundly, givers.

In too many instances, however, this long tradition of generous care for others results in poorer health outcomes for women, both in mental and physical health. It is a quiet crisis that speaks to a larger, and more systemic issue: Hispanic women, and the entire Hispanic population overall, face deeply inequitable health disparities today in the U.S. Nearly all of these health disparities stem from social determinants of health such as income, education status, home language, and physical geography.

With your help, we can change that. Please join ROSAesROJO’s important work to improve the health and wellness of Hispanic women across North Texas. Your gift on North Texas Giving Day will directly support our community’s Hispanic women as they lead healthier, more empowered lives. Because of you, women will have access to culturally-tailored education and coaching to lower the incidence of chronic disease, improved mental and physical health, and perhaps most important—a newfound confidence as they take control of their health.

On behalf of our board, volunteers, staff, and the 1,250 women who need your help over the next year, thank you for your gift.

Mission

ROSAesROJO delivers health and well-being education to Hispanic women and their families in the U.S. by creating positive health communities where culturally tailored and accessible chronic disease prevention programs are at the center. We use four pillars to drive equitable whole health behavioral change: Nutrition, Mental Health, Physical Activity, and Empowered Health.

The women who join us achieve outstanding outcomes related to their health. Over the last year, for example:

—Nutrition: 92% made healthier food choices

—Empowered Health: 88% became stronger self-advocates during medical visits and treatment

—Physical Activity: 89% practiced more intentional movement

—Mental Health: 89% felt at peace and took care of their emotions

Needs

Despite our community’s widespread focus on health and well-being, Hispanic women and men experiences stubbornly high rates of chronic disease, obesity, and cancer:

—Hispanic adults have a 70% higher likelihood of receiving a diabetes diagnosis than non-Hispanic white adults. (OMH, 2018)

—Nearly half of Hispanic adults are obese. (CDC, 2021)

— Among all the causes of mortality and morbidity that affect the well-being of Hispanics in the US, the leading one is cancer. (American Cancer Society, 2020).

— Suicidal thoughts reached 23% among Hispanics, compared to 5% among African Americans and 5% among whites. (CDC, 2021)

ROSAesROJO proactively educates our community on adopting behaviors that improve whole health outcomes: our programs teach healthy eating, mental health, physical activity, and empowered health (self-advocacy) as the foundation for achieving and maintaining well-being while building networks of social support. This work is designed for and by Hispanic women and is grounded in the principles of community care and cultural humility, allowing us to bridge the divide in health outcomes and dismantle health inequities in our community.

Equity Statement

As an organization serving a community of color, ROSAesROJO's mission inherently considers racial equity. As part of our social innovation, we have adopted the principle of Cultural Humility, which promotes respect, humility, reverence, and pride in the roots of all the Hispanics we serve, as a core value. Further, 100% of our team and 99% of our volunteers are Hispanic women. In addition, 89% of our Board of Directors are Hispanic, echoing the population we serve.
