This North Texas Giving Day we're raising funds for our donation farm, McKinney Roots!
Our mission at McKinney Roots is to supply fresh, nutrient-dense eggs and organic produce to people experiencing food insecurity in our community by growing and distributing it through local nonprofits, churches, and schools. Every egg and pound of food we grow is donated to partner organizations working directly to feed the hungry in Collin County.
The food produced on the farm helps feed about 1,000 families every week. Our new chicken house has become home to 350 young hens who are laying 200 dozen eggs every single week! The hydroponic greenhouse enables us to grow lettuce year round, even through the heat of summer and dead of winter.
Our current distribution partners include:
Neighbors Nourishing Neighbors
Community Food Pantry
McKinney Little Free Pantry
Community Garden Kitchen
The Salvation Army
McKinney First Baptist Church
Community Lifeline Center
The Samaritan Inn
Your donations help us grow even more to give! Volunteer opportunities are also available at www.mckinneyroots.org.
The Seed Project Foundation (SPF) funds educational, agricultural, and community initiatives that support sustainability. Sustainability is a social challenge that improves the current quality of life without compromising future generations. The Foundation was established on the premise that funding sustainable ideas today will support ecological and social balance in the future. Providing seed money for causes that enhance the principles of sustainability is our mission.
EDUCATION
We have partnered with the McKinney ISD to enhance the education of every 3rd grade student in the district though our annual field trip program. We have granted funds to build or expand several school gardens in and around McKinney and DFW, with a focus on Title 1 schools. We have also sponsored several local FFA programs.
AGRICULTURE
The SPF hosts two North Texas Farm-to-Table Symposiums annually to bring together farmers, ranchers, artisans, chefs, restaurateurs, and local food advocates to network and share ideas. Our Farm Crisis Fund is dedicated to keeping our farmers in business through natural disasters and economic crises. The SPF is an annual sponsor of the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance Farm and Food Leadership Conference.
COMMUNITY
In a sustainable community, all members including the most vulnerable have access to food, healthcare, and employment. The SPF supports several local nonprofits that share this vision.
In addition to our work at McKinney Roots, the SPF has granted funds to dozens of local organizations including the following:
La Tiendita
One Heart McKinney
Empty Bowls McKinney
