HISTORY:
In May 1993, State Senator Royce West established an internship program through a partnership with Paul Quinn College and the Texas Veterans Land Board to assist Paul Quinn College students with acquiring (paid) employment experience. In June 1993, the program was expanded to include any qualified student residing in District 23 and the employer sponsors were increased from one to nine corporations and agencies. Twenty-seven students were serviced by the inaugural program. The program was renamed the “Dr. Emmett J. Conrad Leadership Program” in August 1993, in honor of the renown Dallas African-American physician and educational advocate. Since 1993, there have been more than 2,700 student placements through the program.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS
"As a second-year Conrad scholar I've had the amazing experience interning at UT Southwestern working under June Trimble in the infectious disease department where I partook in educational studies about infectious diseases and engaged high risk areas of those diseases with surveys as why and what may be the cause of the issue. I was also selected to intern at Baylor Scott and White Dallas working with multiple directors and leaders engaging and shadowing on day-to-day bases learning about insight of what the eye may not see when just entering into a patient's room. The feedback that was given after the presentation humbly encouraged and interested me to start a long-term career. I've learned in this program that networking, positive attitude, and an open mind are 3 main factors to maneuver in society today. I've also gained other knowledge such as how to better my resume as well as Financial control. Again, I am thankful for the opportunity you all have provided and would love to stay connected with this program as I continue on my journey of what success looks like to me."

"Through the Conrad Leadership Program, I was able to discover new things about myself and I was able to connect with people who are at the heights I aspire to be. Conrad Leadership Program has open a lot of opportunities for me."
