On February 25th of this year, I picked up a terrified stray who had hunkered down at a local school. When I found him, he was completely shut down, covered in scars, and severely underweight. Despite all this, he trusted me enough to let me leash him up and put him in my car. It was at that moment that I knew this boy was special. Dropping him off at the shelter absolutely broke my heart (and those who know me know that I don't cry often, so when I tell you that I sobbed...), but I swore to him I would do everything in my power to save him. Over the next month while he battled URIs, I visited him as often as I could and each time he continued to amaze me with his sweetness and trust in me to help him. On March 30th, I learned that Monty had until the end of the following day to find a foster, adopter, or rescue or he would be euthanized. Given that no one had stepped up to help despite my multiple previous pleas, I knew at that point it would take a miracle to save him. So, I loaded up on his favorite snacks (chicken nuggets) and went down to the shelter to say my goodbyes. As I sat there crying, he nuzzled up against me and I knew I had to try one last time to make a miracle happen. I posted the above photo from the shelter parking lot begging for a foster, and thankfully, and by what I believe is a miracle, the most amazing woman saw the picture and knew she had to step up. The next day, I met Misty and her family at the shelter and loaded her car up with supplies from the FWACC foster closet along with Monty, and told him to go be the best boy he could be. Within 24 hours, Misty let me know that she had fallen in love and truly felt that Monty was the missing link to her pack--she refers to him as her soulmate. Monty quickly became a foster fail and is now living his best life with Misty, her family, and her pack of amazing dogs, including two other FWACC alums.
For North Texas Giving Day this year, I am hoping to raise $2,000 to help make miracles happen in Monty's honor. Specifically, I am raising funds to help keep the foster closets stocked so that other fosters have the support they need to step up and make miracles happen for other underdogs just like Monty. With your help, I know that we can continue to be miracle-makers!
