Fort Worth’s Grandest Public Space: The Trinity River.
The Trinity River is absolutely vital to the health and wellness of our economy, environment and community. During the pandemic, our river and trails were a source of inspiration, solace, hope and peace for so many. Today, tens of thousands of people are drawn to the river and trails, and Trinity Park welcomes more than one million visitors every year. Recently, Streams & Valleys, the only nonprofit advocate for the Trinity River and Trails, led the creation of a far-reaching strategic plan called CONFLUENCE. The plan outlines more than 250 policies, programs and projects that ensure that the Trinity River remains a fun, accessible, sustainable and economically vibrant place for everyone. The Trinity Park and Trail Enhancement Project is a key priority and involves multiple enhancements in Trinity Park near the Tilley Bridge — one of the most popular destinations on the river and trails. You can light the way to YOUR legacy by helping us enhance and improve this wonderful landmark for Fort Worth and the entire region.
Iconic. Inspiring. Inclusive.
The Trinity Park and Trail Enhancement Project is all of these things –and much more. Once completed, these improvements will add amenities and beauty and make Trinity Park an even more monumental and popular attraction for Fort Worth and the entire Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Fort Worth’s New Natural Wonder: Project Highlights
Landmark Beacon. This beautiful light will draw attention to the Tilley Bridge in Trinity Park by broadcasting a solid beam of light into the night sky for the whole community to see. The beacon will be illuminated on special occasions and offer an opportunity to celebrate landmark events and milestones.
Love Lock Screen. Designed to enclose and protect the Landmark Beacon, this screen will encourage the trend of people attaching locks to the Tilley Bridge railing to symbolize their love for one another. The Love Lock Screen will be constructed of stainless steel, making it extremely durable and able to stand the test of time. The screen and beacon will be placed atop a grassy berm planted with native grasses and wildflowers, creating a perfect place for family photos.
Harvest Table. Nestled in a grove of cedar elm trees, the harvest table will provide a comfortable place for Trinity Park visitors to picnic, rest and enjoy being outdoors. This harvest table will promote a sense of community in the park, and will be complemented by benches that offer an opportunity for solitude and quiet reflection.
Butterfly Garden. Below the overlook, this gorgeous garden will provide food sources for our pollinator population. Bounded by a terrace wall on two sides, this new feature will offer a remarkable, butterfly-attracting foreground to views of the bridge from the new park terrace.
New and Widened Trails. These improved road crossings and connections will allow bikers, runners and walkers to safely and effortlessly connect to the Tilley Bridge and adjoining facilities such as benches and Fort Worth Bike Sharing stations, while also creating an alternate route north and south along the west bank. The re-paved and 12’ wide trails are a safety priority because of the high volume of trail traffic in Trinity Park.
Wildflower Meadow. Surrounding the Landmark Beacon, this is sure to become Fort Worth’s premier wildflower meadow. The meadow can be promoted each year as the place to savor spring wildflowers, and food trucks can parallel park along the parking lot edge to serve families visiting the area for beautiful photos – a much safer alternative than stopping along high-speed thoroughfares.
Flowering Grove. The grove will commemorate each year of Phyllis Tilley’s life by featuring 62 flowering trees, naturalistically spread around the open areas on the western side. The spring flowering could become Fort Worth’s version of the Washington D.C. Cherry Blossom Walk.
Legacy Goal
The cost of these improvements is $3 million and the project has already received approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The total construction time is estimated to be six months. Streams & Valleys is currently seeking philanthropic contributions and legacy gifts to fund these improvements and ongoing maintenance.
