At NTASR, we know that heartworm disease can be deadly if left untreated, and the cost of treatment often leads to the heartbreaking decision for pet owners to surrender their beloved animals. That’s why we’ve createThe Heartworm Treatment Fund, a critical initiative dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating dogs suffering from heartworm disease—a preventable but potentially fatal condition. In 2024, we’ve treated 22 dogs for heartworms, with each treatment costing $500—totaling $11,000! This fund will give us a head start on treating heartworm - positive dogs through the rest of this year and into 2025.

Your generous contributions to this fund provide essential medical care, life-saving treatment, and the chance for a healthier, happier future for dogs in need. Here’s how heartworm disease works:

- Mosquito Transmission: Mosquitoes become carriers of heartworm larvae after biting an infected animal, then transmit the larvae to healthy dogs with just one bite.

- Deadly Lifecycle: Once inside a dog, the heartworm larvae mature into adult worms that live in the heart and pulmonary arteries. These worms can grow up to a foot long, reproduce, and release offspring into the bloodstream. Without treatment, heartworm disease is fatal.

- Preventable with Medication: Heartworm disease can be easily prevented with monthly medications that stop the larvae from maturing into adult worms. Regular prevention disrupts the heartworm lifecycle, ensuring dogs stay healthy and safe from this life-threatening disease.

Your donation to The Heartworm Treatment Fund directly combats this preventable disease, giving affected dogs a renewed lease on life and the opportunity to thrive in loving homes.

At NTASR, we rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome Australian Shepherds, often from dire situations. Our work includes providing necessary medical care and placing dogs in foster homes until they find their forever families. We proudly serve North Texas and surrounding states, and with your help, we can continue to save lives!
